Farm properties Io Be At Record High Warns Farm Debts Are Also Mounting WASHINGTON, UP — The nation’s farmers, their land and property are expected to be worth a record >172,100,000.000 by the end of this; year, the agriculture department said today. • ‘ But the department warned that fam debts also are mounting and urg.id farmers to] prepare “for possible' lower farm prices and incontee’*’ Hi 1958. 't. . »' The purchasing power of net farm income may be near the pose-war low of 1950," a farm finance report said. 1 J The report estimated that total assets .0 American agriculture at years’ qnd will show a two percent gain ol%r the (valuation for Jan. 1. That Would be a comparatively smt 11 gain. The (value of the nation’s farm plant rpse nine, percent, during 1951 and 12 percent dur ng 1950. ' Increases in value over Jan. 1, 1952 are expected for each type of physical farm asset except livestock. ! ? I The report said the increase in farm assets "should be viewed against the background of a >l,700,000,000 increase in farm debts.” It said increases in farm debts are occurring because of rising exlpenditures for ifarm operations; farmers’ needs tor large working balances; and pontipued investments by farmers in land, livestock and farm and home, improvements. Because' cash fariii prices are likely to average lower next year and production costs to mount, the department repeated as it has in easier "outlook" reports that farmers net Income in 1953 msy fall below this year.! , But this time it added farmers should he! prepared fqr even greater changes, "particularly wHen, as now, the international tensions are gfrpat;’’ It sajd farmers “who would be , seriously affected” bp less favorrdbln conditions year, would be “well advised tb strengthen theli- positions" whild they can by accumulating some extra cash or paying off sorpe debts. Di some cases, it said, the best remedy may lid Ito increase production In ordef to reduce unit costs; to * accumulate . a "specific reserve for depreciation of machinery and buildings”; or convert short-term debts into long-term debts..' Dec. 31 Deadline For Farm Sign-up The 1953 agricultural conservation program is under way in Adamis county, Winfred L. Gerke, chairman of the county production and marketing administration committee, stated today. schools for community committee men have been held, and now thene committeemen will contact Individual farmers. Thirty six PMA community committeemen are engaged in making \these farm-.by-farm visits. The closing date for the sign-up is Dec. 31. Before these committeemen start making contacts, the chairman explained, they were given the benefit of instruction reflecting the training and experience of fpeclallsts of the soil Conservation services, forest service, extension service, farmers home administration and PMA. This added to theta* experience as practical farmers in their local districts, gives them a good rounded prepara ipn for contacting farmers in connection with: the 1953 ACP sign-up, Qerke believes. The purpose of\ the committeeman’s visit will be to help the'individual farmer in determining the most needed conservation on his farm and to acquaint A the \ farmer with the assistance available through the ACP. ' Gerke urges all farmers to study their conservation problems and 1953 farm plans and be ready to discuss them with the committeemen at the time of the farm visit.
