Taft Asserts Nixon Should Stay In Race Sees No Reason For Nixon Withdrawal DETROIT, VP—«en. Robert A. Taft said today he saw “no reason why” Sen. Richard Nixon should quit as the Republican vice presidential candidate. “I thought Senator Nixon made a most effective speech,’’ the Ohio senator said. “But I didn’t need to be convinced. I was convinced already.” . “I don’t see any reason why he,. Nixon, should not stay on thp ticket,” Taft said.’ Taft, on a one-day campaign swing through Northern and Western . Michigan. said he thought the California senator’s request that Gov. Both areas where Taft will appear were centers of strong Republican support for the Ohio senator’s nomination for the , presidency before the GOP convention in July, Eisenhower’s victory In the nomination battle left many Republicans disgruntled tn the Upper Peninsula and Western Michigan. GOP leaders now hope Taft’s speeches in the two areas may revive party enthusiasm, which they admit has been at low ebb since the convention. \. After a brief stop at. Willow Run airport to pick qp Michigan Republican J'aft’s chartered plane leaves for Escanaba where the Ohio senator will deliver a radio appeal for Upper Peninsula support of ■'Elsenhower. .The address, to ad broadcast by an eight-station hookup, is scheduled at 2:30 p. m.IfCST, Taft's Second major address will be given at 6 p. m. in Benton Marbor., . .
