I | On &&«" t dre» f /Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, .{The Glory of Solomon’s Empire, I Kings 4:2026; 11:4-8; for Sunday, September 128. (Temperance). This lesson i' shoWs how indulgence caused a king and bls people to lose moral, spiritual and national greatness. Solomon, so blessed wisdom, ’wealth, power, began to grow weak, sensual. materialistic, proud, When he l disregarded God’s laws. • V. 20. “Judah' and! Israel were fliiahy as the sahd which is by the {tea in multitude, eating and drinkdug and making merry.” There was in Solomon’s kingdom, •inaterially, to insure success, but prosperity and power linnst be used for God’s glory,: It vrasn’t.l ■ 0 V. 21. “And Solomon ruled over the kingdoms from tile River unto ;the land of the Philistines, and junto the border of’;, Egypt; they brought tribute, and served Solomon all the days of his life.” Solomon’s . kingdom, geographically, was about what God wanted it to he. The king had peaceful relations wlt-h his neighbors; commerthem flourished; his brilliance and wisdom were uncomparable. :[| 'V5.22.23t “And: Solhinon’s provisions for one day was thirty measures of fine.flour, and threescore Pleasures of mead, ten fat oxen, und twenty oxen out 1 of the pastures. and a hundred sheep, besides harts, and gazelles, and roebucks. and fatted fowl.” A mea-; Sure contains about 10 bushels. It ftas\l>een computed that this is the ration for 48.000-54,0(10- This was glory, yes, hut only external glory. ’ r- V. 24. “For he had dominion over 411 the region oh this side the Jtiver \. . . over all the kings on this side.of th6 river: and hie had peace . , . rotond -about him.” Israeli formerly aii 'agricultural hali§h, becoming under Solomon sone having peaceful relations with, all surrounding nations. from agriculture to industry and commerce. To maintain our status as world leader we shall have to regain our high moral and spiritual 'ideals. \. j V 5.25,26. “And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his Lig tree, from Dan ... to Beer-sheba, all the days of Solomon. And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses . . . and twelve thousand horsemen.” Prosperity, security, comfort and ease, did not insure against national decline. At Solpihon’s death the kingdom was divided. Intellectual brilliance is no substitute for moral character. >We should learn that from history V. 4. “For it cante to pass, when Solomon waa old, that hie wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Jehovah ... as was the heart of David his father.*’ God had forbidden the Israelites td marry outside their nation. Solomon did so for political reasons mostly, but ortfe indulgence led to another until his heart was |urtfed from God. \ V. 5. “For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sid* onians. and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.” Ashtoreth was the goddess of sexual love (prostitution being a religious rite), and Milcom (the same as Molech in V.7.), the fire god to whom children were burned. Religious tolerance is not a Christian virtue when it changes one’s religious convictions. ' V. 6. “And Solomon did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah and\ went not fully after Jehovah, as did David his father.” Although David sinned, he repented, and never did he worship pagan gods. Solomon's sensuality weakened his will and led to tnorAl decay. To associate wl|h those of low ideals is to become like them. V 5.7,8. “Then did Solomon build a high place ... for all his foreign wives, who burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods/’ A place” was an altar or sanctuary built on a hill. This angered God, IRrt: for. David *8 sake, Ha permitted Judah to be ruled at Solomon’s death by his\son. A great man and a great nation had fallen. o’clock. I'l-Mid-week service gt i7:30 p.m.. I ; It: is a great accomplishment to learn to finish i each day and be done with it as a closed chapter in your life. The day must be fihishished, however, in dod’s way—mistakes corrected, sins forgiven. Then ypn can relax and let body, ■ mind, and soul rest in the “everlasting arms of God” with confi-i dence abiding in Him. A new and better day will arrive in the morning.
