UP — An embargo on hog shipments to stockyards—here was lifted today, but, officials in four other Midwestern cities took drastic measures to curtail the spread of vesicular exanthema, a rare and serious hog disease.- ~ ’ Jay 1 Dillingham, president Os the Kansas City Stockyards Co.; Michael! Flynn, president of the Kansas City livestock exchange; and Dr. Leo Henry, Kansas City representative of the bureau of animal of the department of agriculture issued a joint statement lifting the embargo. The statement cleared the way for shipments from all but 22 quarantined counties in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and lowa. .Dillingham said he heard of the modification of the-quarantine in a telephone call from Washington. He said he had been informed that the new order declared that stockyards were tree to accept shipments from areas if those areas had been declared "clean’’ of the Virus. The Kansas City yards wQuld be free to ship the hogs to other unaffected areas, Dillingham said". Vesicular exanthema cannot be transmitted to .human taefngs. When it strikes swine, it causes bleeding from the mouth and rapid loss of weight.At Lincoln, Neb., state agriculture director Clay Wright banned all swine shows in the state until the disease has been wiped Out. The action automatically cancelled the Nebraska state fair’s swine show which annually drew about 2.200 hogs. In Omaha, the embargo was still in effect but livestock men there believed it might be lifted much as the Kansais City one was upon Clarification of the quarantine order from Washington. - Harry B. Coffee, president of the Union Stockyards Co. in Omaha, said the yards in that city have been clear of the virus since July 3. Steel Sliver Kills Worker At Rochester ROCHESTER, Ind. UP —Joseph L. Shaw, 58, Rochester, was killed Tuesday when a sliver of steel flew off scrap metal he was cutting at a salvage yard and pierced his chest. Warsaw Motorist Killed In Accident PIERCETON, Ind. UP—A Warsaw motorist was killed today when his auto skidded off the Pierceton-Winona Lake road west of here and wrapped itself around a tree, brushing the driver. Merritt Bennett, 45, was killed instantly in the accident which went undiscovered for about five hours. Stale police said the mishap occurred in front of a farm home, but the occupants did-not investigate because they said they heard no cries after the crash.
