Oats Demonstration Is Held In County Session Conducted By Purdub Expert As part of Purdue University’s extension, or practical education program, iKeller Beeson, a top man in the extension division, held a session with Adamk county farmers this week at a variety oats demonstrhtioQ at the farm of Joe Iscli in Fremh township. besides the question and answer period, at which Beeson wrestfed with problems of farm men long in the business, he showed six different kinds of oats- —planted next to each othefr —demonstmting the vay the niany species grow in this section ot Indiana. The six varieties —each fertilized with 309 pounds of 3-12-12 mixture of; compounds — were (‘olumhia, Clinton 59, Nemaha, Ajax and Number 0205. Beeson said the most popular oat in tjh|e state is 'Clinton 59, which, by the way, was developed by Purdue’s research program. He said it alone is best, adapted to the .conditions farmers are conirouted with here. Each plot was -239 feet long by about eifjht and two thirds feet wide. Here are the results. (L. E. Archbold,: Adams county agricultural agent, explained that the »xiierimeutai plots would not normully have been combined so soon because the moisture content, at the time the field group was concidbring taking it off, iyas' suspect-
"That's right, the Massey-Harris Super 26. It has 24 different speeds, and the capacity to cover as mnrh ns 50 acres a day. You should see the way straw comes out of my 26—just as even as a ribbon. Every unit in the machine handles all the cutter-bar cuts. That’s what Massey-Harris means when they talk about Balanced Separation. And what a cut—sure, 12 feet. And it's easy on fuel. Traction is wonderful—l've been in wet fields where a pull-type combine couldn't go. "Look Joe, I’m fo town tomorrow. Why don’t you go • with me and take a look at the Super 26. It’s a honey.” FOE BALANCED SEPARATIOI . MAAE IT A MASSEY-HARRIS KLENK’S

ed to be too much. Archbold’s figures bear that out. With the exception of Number 0205, the oats were, all above the percentage in moisture content considered safe for removal.) Benton, 40.7' bushels per acre; 1 Columbia, 39.4; Clinton 59, 42.1; Nemahja, 40; Ajax, 31.5; Number 0205, 42.7. An important part of the demonstration was devoted entirely to pressing the importance of us-* ing nitrogen as a part and parcel of planting thd oats. Beeson told some 30 farmers from Adams county who gathered at Isch’s farm, that nitrogen, in many cases increased the yield 50 percent over other fertilizer or- no fertiliser at all. Six plots of Clinton 59 — used because itis so popular — were planted next to each other, the only difference) in each piece being the amount of nitrogen used in planting tl em. Frpm the results, it becam i quite 'apparent to the farmers ttat nitrogen is the thing to us; and if they are not using it . . . will after seeing the \ outcome. Here are the figures: The first plot was the control, the comparison—lt had no nitrogen—42.l bushels to tl)e acre; plot 2 was fertilized with 300 pounds of mixture 0-15-15, bushels; plot 3 had mixture 3-15-15, 48.6; plot 4 used 6-15-15,\ 53.2; plot 5— here the most nitrogen was used . . . the results were galled amazing by all who watched — 61,2 bushels to the here; pldt 7, again no nitrogen, 42.4. Many; -of the farmers walked away from the revealing exhibit saying one thing, — “next year, more nitrogem” } I The Mississippi feiver surface between dikes at New Orleans is ndrmalij' about three feet above the average level of the city’s streets.
