Democrats Plan Better TV Show ; Making Changes For TV At Convention CHICAGO, UP — Democrats figure they’ve a cinch to put on a better TV show next week than the Republicans did last. Top Democrats, including President Truman, spent a- lot of time Watching television screens while the GOP convention was in progress. This week Kenneth D. Fry, head of the Democratic national committee’s radio-TV division, is mak ; ing some changes at the stockyards arena on the basis of critiques submitted by the and others of the GOP performance. For one thing, the Democratic party plans to present a better—or at least more 2 —face to the 60,000,000 TV viewers. •The Republicans were long on profiles, classic and otherwise. That was because the cameras were so placed as to catch only Side views unless the speaker did some fancy playing to the galleries bn the right and left. A new television eye being installed at the arena will, pick up head-on view’s of Democratic speakers.. It will sit on top oE a tubular steel platform straddling the center aislb and rising above the alternates' seats toward the back of the hail. ; ' : Thar will take care of one Democratic criticism of the Republican performance. Another criticism, said to have been forwarded by President Truman personally, was that during the GOP convention TV cameras which were focused on the speaker picked up tos many, figures in the background. t Fry said the .Democrats will cut some of that sort of false background by clearing aisles and admitting nobody except those with foolproof credentials to the staircase adjacent to the speakers’ platform.
