Merry-go-round Idea Urged In Food Stores
HELENA, MONT., UP — There xnay be a revolution in .the grocery •tore business one of these days. Ken Thompson of Helena hopes it will be a seven-and-a-half minute revolution. That’s how long it will take one of Thompson’s merry -go - roundstyle grocery shelves to bring the stores content? around to the shopper, who stands by, picking out what she wants. Thompson’s idea is to give |the smaller grocer a better chance to compete with the chain-store supermarket. .'n "Eve spent my life trying to make the independent merchant capable of competing with chain stores,” he explained. “That's why I Invented the wheel?’ Thompson, Who has been instTU? mental in formipg at least one organization of grocers in this area, said his newest idea*my cut operating costs about two percent, (in a business where the mark-up is often low, that little two percent could be important. \- > The Giant Wheel Fixture Corp, will make a 48-foot wheel as a standard size, when it gets going; The company also will, make wheels, in larger or smaller sizes, depending on the size of the customer’s store. The wheel, with up to six shelves.\will sit in the middle of the store; making one complete turn every seven and half minutes. Shoppers can take up a post at one spot Arid wait for the store’s coptents to come by; if they’re in a hurry, they can scoot around to meet the beens or ketchup half way. 1 ' -. Fish Smell, Sure, But People Also Smell To Fish OTTAWA UP —People “smell” as far as Pacific coast salmon are concerned. The Canadian fisheries research board, said that human skin odors have an adverse effect on migrating salmon. If there’s a human being within smelling distance of the salmon, the fish won’t swim uj?to spawn. Scientists attached to the research board proved the aversion of salmon to humatv beings during experiments at Stamp River, Vancouver Island, B. C. The department built a concrete fish ladder on the Stamp river to courit and : observe adult salmon during the period when they go upstream to spawn. Scientists first noted that the salmon disliked human odor when a man waded barefoot into tl)e river about 20 feet upstream from the ladder to retrieve a tagged coho salmon. ~ - “It was noticed at the counting point, three steps below the top of the ladder, that there was an immediate and noticeable drop in the upstream ’ migration,” the board said. < ; I • 4 “The location of the disturbance was out of sight of the fish, and it was unlikely, with the noise of falling water in each step of thje ladder that the sound of the disturbance could be heard. “Therefore it Seemed that an 1 odor frorii .human skin had repelled the fish. Further tests bore this out. An observer placed his hand in the flow of water passing over the sill \into the step immediatelyl above that in \ which counts were being made, f . V “A minimum amount of idisturhance and movement accompanied this act,” the board. Said. “After one minute of immersion the hand was removed. A quite; sudden and striking reduction in the rate of stream migration occurred. From a mean rate of 34 cpho each 10 minutes the number 'dropped to four one hour later a repetition of the test resulted in a similar decrease in the migratory rate,” |g| JK. ywv W i J FAINT FIT weather for man nor beast, ice-pack wearing Jiggs told his master in Pittsburgh, Pa., as he panted to beat the heat. wheel under one side of the affair. The, big whepl would revolve on rollers or wheels. If Thompson’s ideas work out ‘in actual practice, there would be nd center shaft to take up room that could otherwise be used for grocery stocks. Thompson thinks the wheel may cut shopping time at least in half. Not only that but it’s efficient in other ways, he argues. “The standard wheel will be able to hold about 600 cases of grocery items,” he explained. “That’ more than you’ll find on the shelves of many stores.” ’ Furthermore, it’s the answer to the display problem, he said. A merchant won’t ;have to worry about giving seasonal \items better display at certain times of the year. Any spot bn the wheel is the best spot.; a \ Fresh produce and meats might be.-, handled in more conventional cases or display shelves. There's also a place for the children in the kind of store Thompson has In mind. He’s build a sort of play pen for them just inside thevdoor, leaving mother Or dad freir to do the shopping. Thompson is one of these natural born grocers, who can almost sense if everything is going* as it should in a store. He can tell if the customers are peeved over something and if all is not as it should be. || t . ;/ ' . ■ I “I can’t explain it.” he said, “but I know when I walk into a siore if it’s efficient or not.” Efficiency, he believes, is what the small store owner needs to keep in business. As Thompson says: “If you can’t. beat your competition, jump over them.” As, a result Os the experiments, spectators watching the i“nigra|ion of salmon have been asked nbt to interfere with the fish; or create a disturbance in the water with ttyeir hands. Scientists made other tests to see whether any other odors, such as those from various'organic substances, disturbed the fish. The fish paid no attention to these odors but were iibmediately repelled when a human hand was placed in the water.

Among the li|tle-known casualties of World War II were the race course and cricket fields at Gibraltar The British eliminated them to make way for a modern airfield, says the Rational Geographic Society. d -— Besides aiding motor travel, one of the main purposes of early automobile dubs was to overcome the antagonism of livery stable operators who frequently barred “horseless carriages” from their premises.
