Brooklyn Section Hard Hit By Fire Greenpoint Scene Os Costly Blaze" NEW YORK, UP — An eightalarm fire raced through 11 tenement and factory buildings in the crowded Greenpoint section of Brooklyn today, threatening to “take the entire town with it” before it was brought under control. More than 500 persons were driven from their homes! Damage was estimated at $500,000 to $1,000,000. ' * Flames belched through the roof of an oil-soaked old trolley barn and leaped two streets. Nine workmen escaped from the car barn but the watchman, Walter Roble, 66, was missing. , Roble’s wife and daughter pounded and clawed futilely at a metal street door as he cried “Please help'me.” The cries became weaker and weaker and finally out in the roar of flames. - , Four unidentified men had been digging a well inside the building, but fire officials believe they escaped and went to their homes. It was the* first eight-alarm or “borough alarm” in the city since a Manhattan pier fire in 1947. Fire Officials said the equipment responding to today’s blaze exceeded that at either the 1947 blaze or a 1946 nine-alarm fire on Staten Island. Six women were treated for shock and hysteria. One was hospitalized after fainting three times in the street. Ten firemen were treated for smoke inhalation and minor injuries. Hundreds of women and children, many still in night dress and all clutching bundles or dragging suitcases, filled the streets. Four tenement buildings were swept into the spreading flames. Police evacuated others in ’a three-block radius of the blaze. The fire was brought under control but still was burning at 10:35 a.m. The cause was unknown. giro A son was 'born to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bdllenbacher of at 11:30 p.m. Thursday at the hospital, weighing 7 lbs., 15 oz. A baby boy was born at 6:40 a.m., Sunday, to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Miller of Monroe at the hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Shoaf are the parents of a baby boy, weighing 8 lbs., 12 oz., born at the hospital Sunday at 3:42 a.m. At l:2ff a.m. Sunday at the hospital, a daughter was born to Mr; and Mrs. Howard Sdhultz, weighing 6 lbs., 15 oz. | A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Milton Gerber of Geneva, weighing 8 lbs.. 4 oz., at 11:20 a.m. Sunday at the hospital. Bond Is Filed For Fireworks Display In compliance with regulations of Kalver today filed a bond with sheriff Robert Shraluka to cover any damages arising from the fireworks demonstration the evening of July 4 at KalVer’s drive-ln theater a mile southeast on route 33. KINGSPORT, Tenn. UP Richard White, B,’ of Kokomo, Ind., died Sunday night of injuries suffered when he was hit by a car. He had accompanied his parents to Kingsport to visit relatives.
