■ Comments JBI I pn Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, Persons and Property, Exodus 20:15; Luke 16: 112, for Sunday, June 8. > The Old Testament taught honesty. Building on this foundation, taught stewardship. Mosed laid the foundation; Jesus erected the superstructure. T ' V. 15. "Thous shalt not steal.” There are the rights of private ownership of property that must be protected. This is the basis of a true economy. Persons td“be ! rightly related must relate rightly their possessions; this can be dorie ,ionly as we are Christian stewards who practice absolute honesty as to time, talents, privileges, and money. V.l. “And he said to his disciples, there was a certain rich map which had a steward; and the saipe was accused of him that he had, wasted his goods.” The rich map employed a general superintendent to\ look after his affairs, who rendered to him his report which showed there was a waste somewhere. Jesus taught that nothing be wasted, hence the gathering of the left-overs when feeding the. ten thousand. It is good business to check lArp on how that which has beeh committed to us has been used. V-2. “And he called mini and said unto him, How is it l that I hear this of thee? Give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward?’ The rich man gave a warning which allowed a, little time before the final dis-, charge. Here was a deliberate pro-ceeding—-a good' suggestion. V. 3. “Then the steward said within himself. What shall I do? Fo? my Lord taketh! away from me the stewardship; I cannot dig; ,to beg I am ashamed.” He wa? too proud to work, too proyd to; I beg. He was, ptrtnto thjnkinjg; he had bean dishonest and instead <j>f acknowledging it he would go on with added dishonesty. One wrong begets another if not corrected. V 4. “I am resolved what to do. ' that, when I am out of the stewardship, they may receive mg into their houses.” Here is; one commendable trait—namely, that of
- in a very simple way Joseph Foitf Newton has summarized his message as a minister: “To! live well we must have a faith to live, by. a self to live with, a work to live for—something to which we can give ourselves and thus get ourselves off our hands. We cannot tell what may happen to us—but we can decide what happens in us—how we take it, what we do with it. —Life is an adventure of faith; faith in God, in our souls, in Jite, in our •fellow-souls.” \ Lesson Prayer: _ Lesson prayer: We pray for such absolute honesty among men that there will be no stealing of time, talent, and money anywhere, in brder that greed, graft rind corruption may be eliminated and we shall be a free people not bound by’the power of the law. May, the spirit of truth posses us; may'our. relations with others be open and 1 above board: may dur transactions be in keeping with the command-

planning future security; to do this one steward would make friends who would befriend him when in, need. The making of highly commendable. V. 5. “And so he called every one of his Lord’s debtors unto Jim and said, unto the first, How much owest thou unto my Lord?” Evidently there were many debtors and they were in position to take commands from this steward, the general manager. A business meeting may well be imagined. V. 6. “And he said, a hundred ineastires of oil. And he said unto him. Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.” Here was cleverness that would make friends. Just how far may one allow rievefriess' qnd be honeslt? Is’ there such a thing as Christian shrewdness? Immediate action was necessary for the steward was now on probation. * I V.7. “Then said he to another, and how 'much, owest thou? And he said, a hundred measures of wheat. Arid he said urito him, take thy bill and write fourscore?’ Evidently there was no objection to this plan of procedure. The debtors were all willing tp take advantage of this offer which was stealing in the name of business. They proceeded on the clairti that all are doing it —a very bad policy. V.B. “And the Lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely; for the children of this generation are wiser than the Children of light.’’ Thft unjust steward was commended for the fact that future security was in his program and that he would make friends to gain that end. Here was application to the followers of the Lord —friends and future security. Os course the; way these objectives are reached is another question. V. 9. “And F say unto you. Make unto yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness, that when you fall, they may receive yourselves into everlasting habitations.” We hiay make friends who will welcome us in the other world by bringing the gospel to them here and now. Here is the highest use of money. V.IQ. “He that is faithful tn that which is least is faithful also In much.” The final test of friendship and money is living faithfully to God. —Based on copyrghted outlines produced by the Division of Christian Education, National Council of the Churches of\ Christy in the ip.S.A., and used by permission.
ment to love our neighbors as ourselves,. Clerieua Says: Clericus says: “If you cannot be faithful in handling of money, Jesus s said how can God commit to you the true spiritual riches which are of incalculable value? And if you have not been faithful in administering material things for other people, and especially in administering God’s gifts as a gdod steward, how can you expect that God will commit to you!his greatest gift, which Is the gift of saL vation?” ■ ' Berth Review 53 Object Sunday Talks to Children, by Joseph A. Among the teen-ag, ers, scouting is favored, and besides the special services and spiritual meetings planned to fill their needs, the churches sponsor excursions, sports, and summer- and wihter-camps for them. The emphasis in all this work is of evangelistic, though social * work is also given a place. Let all things be done decently and in order.—St. Paul.
