Chemical Corp, already is producing chemicals on a commercial basis at a new $11,000,000 coal hydrogenation plant *at Institute, W. Va. He added that the bureau of mines has shown that gasoline can be produced synthetically from coal almost as cheaply as from petroleum. 5 “All of these developments £;e heralds of the new era of 'broadening uses of coal which is now beginning,’’ he said, “I .believe that the time is uot far distant when we will witness the consumption of millions of tons of coal annually for the production of synthetic liquid fuels and critical chemicals.” Connor said it is a good thi\ig
the nation has almost unlimited supplies of coal to rely on for oil and gasoline because it is using more? oil than it has been able to produce. He said that last year alone the United States used about 2,2711,000,000 barrels of petroleum products. He noted that proved reserves of petroleum amount to only 32,000,000,000 barrels “or only about 12 times our present annual’ consumption.” i “This situation provides a compelling argument for' the development of supplementary sources of liquid fuels,” he said. ! ‘ln a time of emergency such as the present we are taking a dangerous risk if we do not proceed as rapjdly as humanly possible to develop-such a supplementary sourceA Connor said the bureau of mines has been working for years to find such a feasible source by trying to improve on the coal-to-01l process. As a result of its studies, he said, synthetic gasoline can be made for about 11 cents a gallon. Gasoline made from petroleum now sells for 11 or 12 cents a gallon at the, refinery. . V > He said* cost calculations are being made by the bureau on a modernized coal-to-oil plant which may cut operating costs.

French Reds Seize Huge Aufo Factory Part Os National Sit-Down Strike ' Paris, June 4.—(UF)—Communist “commandos” seized control of the huge nationalized Renault automobile factory in the Paris suburbs today and police massed to storm the plant if necessary to drive them out. \ i The strong-arita Red forces seized the giant factory as part of a plan ned national sit-down strike it: protest against the imprisonment of Communist leader Jacques \Duclos. The strike itself was a dismal failure. A government communique said that less than 2 percent of the country’s workers responded. Sim-' ilarly, to\igh police acting under orders from “strong man” premier, Antoine Pinay had smashed Red disorders last week and had seized Communist headquaiters throughout France-in dramatic raids Saturday. The Reds, led by a Communist member of parliament, first tried to seize the Renault plant—a sprawling city in itself —this morning, only to be held off by workers and plant guards. But between 2,000 and 3,000 Reds, organized as commandos, seized control this afternoon while outside'an additional 7,000 organized a shouting demonstration. Officials of the plant barricaded themselves In the office section, awaiting a possible attack. EISENHOWER (Continued From Page Wnr L ty, will carry was uncertain.
