Giants Defeat Dodgers, Take League's Lead New York, 3iay 27 — (UP) — Because Leo Durocher blew his top on the bull pen telephone and told George Spencer to “sit down and qu\t throwing,” the Giants instead of the ledgers were in first place today. b i Spencer last night pitched a polished relief jpty, holding Dodgers scoreless for 7 2-3 innings as New York won; first of a vitai three-game split-park series, 4 to 2 on homers by Bobby Thomson and Whitey Loickmati. The victory ,was the fifth ?in a row i for the Giants land it 1 snapped an eightgame winning streak for the Dodgers.-', ’ j ■ . But if Durocher 'hadn’t sounded off on the telephone, 4 Spencer might not hav£ had the strength (o come in and; pitch his first victory of the year in relief of Jhn t Hearn. For in previous Giant gaintes, when the tall and powerfully built right handed relief expert from Coluriibuh, 0., was in the bull ptan, he got up to work whenever it looked; as if his mates might be in trouble. “ “He did it oh his own and he kept wearing hiinself' oiit,” Durocher said. “I called the (bull pen to keep that gdy quiet-—We would need him later on, pjobably when we played Brooklyn.” It was an effprt, particularly because Spencer felt he wasn’t get- ; ting enough w’ork. He hadn’t got--1 ten into a game since May 17 and * he nagged Durocher, trying to let him pitch batting practice and go to work in the bull at all times. ' '<■ , “I knew we’d need him and this was the time,” Durocher said. “And wasn’t he a dandy all the way?” That was an understatement — even for Durocher. Spencer took over in the second, ended the only Dodger rally of the night with a double play and blanked the Brooks with three hits the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Bobby Thomson drove 5n three;runs with a homer and a fly; and Whitely Lockman smacked a homer and triple to provide all the offensive fireworks necessary. In the American league, the Rejd Sox and Senators who are tiod for second place, each gained a half game on first place Cleveland FREE SHOWS Starting Friday, May 16th and then EVERY I Monday and I<iday CLEM’S LAKE
