Cain Defeats Bob Feller In One-Hit Duel New York, April 24 — — Skinny southpaw Bob Cain’s r«vengefvtas sweet-and-complete today but only after he and the Br*own3 had shaded Cleveland’s fabulous Bob Feller; 1-0, in a dbu- - ble one-hitter —the rtiost speetacu- ; lar -pitching duel in the major leagues in 35 years... Not since May 2. 1917 when Fred Toney of .the Reds and Jim (Hip 4 po) Vaughn of the Cabs matched no-hitters for nine innings had two rival pitchers cohie so close to nohit immortality in the 'same game. The Reds won that famous duel off yesteryear, J-0. 'when they got bits and pcorfed wjth thfe aid of an-error in th«( 10th inning. 1 1 \| It required the spectacular duel ib steal the spotlight from another astonishing event:- the victory, seventh in _ eight starts for the Browns, moved them into first place in the American elague race. The failure to pitch a. no-hitter last night hardly weighed heavily on Cain’s mind. For him. the victory was enough to .make up for the 'fact that he was the victim of the third ho-hitter of FelleCs career —a 2-1 Indian triumph over the Tigers last July 1. . For Feller; there was the heartbreaking thought of what might have been. Flor little Bob Young's leadoff in the first inning —which rookie left-fielder Jim Fridley misplayed into a triple that led to the game's only run~ spoiled his bid to ibpcome the first pitcher in baseball history to.hurlfour no-hitters.
