I Comments J&l I On s.®.-’,®! EL Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, Thomas ahd the Risen Lord, John 11:14-16; 14:1-6; 20:24-29, for Sunda|r> April 13. In the lesson texts we have four viewpoints of Thomas, an honest ■doubter, who at first resorted to reason, and later unusual faith in Christ. He "was devoted to Christ, willing to die him. His example is of great importance in this scientific age. \J + . V. 14. "Then Jesus sad to them J plainly, Lazarus is dfcad." Previously he said that Lazarus was asleep. Here is an of death—not an end, but a transition during a period of sleep. Well may we pray, “Now I, lay me down toi sleep." | | V. 15. “And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to th° intent that ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.'" The very best of the Lord's follower.; need more faith; to see the demonstration of the power of jGod helps our faith. To see a criminal transformed into a beautiful Christ tian life —a modern resurrection of life—does much forione’s Christian faith. Lazarus, pronounced dead, was not far away from his body, a mysterious life that forbids an explanation based on reason., V. 16. “Then said Thqmas, which is called Dydimus. unto his fellow disciples. Let us go that we may die with him.” Thomas' love for Christ would make him a Christian martyr. Vs.l. "Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God. believe also in me.” Death ought not produce fear and it will not do so it one has profund faith in Christ, for he has taken ouit the "sting of death.” By his resurrection he gives “victory over the gravej Vs. 2. 3. “In iny Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place -for you. And if I go and prepare a plaice for you. I will come again, arid receive you unto myself that where I am ye may be also.” Jesus; the resurrected one, must have a place and "so must his followers*—a far better place than the one on earth. with Jesus here and hereafter is heaven. Vs. 4.5. "And whither 1 go ye know, and the . way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord we know riot wither thou goest; and how can we know the way?” Thomas resorted to reason; never was a than who lived on somewhere after death a fact in history; so there Were no physical guide posts or road signs. V. 6. “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh to the Fater, but by me.”| The answer to everything Is Jesus. To know him is to know the way. To love him is to love our neighbor as ourselves; to know the power of the resurrection is to know life; to know -him irivolves the knowing and the doing (of his will, for “he that doeth the 1 -will of God shall know the way. * Vs. 24, 25. "Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put iny fingers into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will hot believe." Thomas followed reason on the principle that seeing is believing. Vs. 26. 27. "And after eight days the disciples were within, and Thomas with them; then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in their midst, and said, Peace he unto you. Then saidth he, to Thomas. Reach hither thy /Inger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand and thrust it into my side; and be not faithless but believing.” The living resurrected Christ pierces into the mjnd and heart with, the message of peace that is the result of saving faith. The Christian principle; is believing, then seeing—first faith, then reason within limits. Vsß. \ “And Thomas answered and said unto him. My Lord ahd my \God.” Thomas noU- saw God and the Lord as one. To know the Lord is to know God. Note the word “my". No greater Vlaim of a great possession can be made. V. 29. “Jesus saith unto him, Thomas. because thouj hast seen me. thou hast -believed; blessed are they that have not seen and yet have believed.” Here is a beatitude showing basip faith over reason. — Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Division of Chis* tian Education, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., and used by permission.

The “question is? how tnuch do they believe. The devils believe and tremble. Thomas believed but? not enough; he wanted reason for the fact of the Lord’s resurrection. When he laid aside reason and took Jesus at his wqrd, he cried out, “My Lord and my God." To -him, Jesus said that the plan is to believe and the none can see. The Thomas experience'is too common; there is no confession of Christ as Lord withut appealing to reason. —Rev. D. Carl Yoder. . J—- .
