News Froin Purdue Lafayette, Ind. April 4—Tests will be started this spring in Indiana to find out if crop yields can be increased by breaking open the subsoil to drain the top soil, then coaxing crop roots down deep after the water. K . Purdue University agronomists will dig 20 inches into the soil, leaving lime and fertilizer at dif*ferent depths that they hope will entice plant roots doAwn to keep the soil open. They thipk the added water, plus the resulting better soil structure, may mean improved crop growth and .yieldMost of the’attention of farmers" and agronomists in thd past hgis been directed at the depth of soil that a moldboard plow dan reach. This ,is u rather shallow layer, and beneath it she subsoil may be acid, low in plant food and dense, explains Dr. Helmut Kphnke, leader of the project.
The l|me and fertilizer are put into the> subsoil by means of tubes attached behind the subsoiler shoes, cutting through thd soil every 28 Inches. Kohnke believes that spading tne treatments every 3% to 4 feet would sufficient to accomplish the purpose. v This wider spacing would materially reduce the poijvdr requirement per acre to pull the “subsoil feeder.” A crop rotation qf corn, soybeans, oats, and hay will be used in the tests. Agrlditfturai engineers at Purdue will studiy operation of field impl4 ments needed, so that equipment can be developed if the subsoil feeding proves Worth while. A. R. Bertrand 1 of |he agronomy department Will wqrli with Koknke in studying *|hat take place in the soil itself, t’hp amounts of soil moisture and plaint nutrients. They will also record crop yields and any changes in appearance of crops or root systems.' ■ Trade Ip a Good Town —Decatur
