Anthrax Believed I Now Under Control State Credits Ban On Imported Meal Indianapolis, Apr. 4 — (UP) — Indiana authorities i credited a state ban on the importation of uninspected foreign bone meal today with providing a “solution” to an outbreak-of anthrax in farm animals and said they beliieved the disease was under controh Dr. Leslie M. Hutchings, head of Purdue University’s ceterinary science department, told of the apparent success of the ban late yes- 1 terday at a conference in Cover-* nor Schricker’s . ofliice between state officials and rendering plant representatives. , Hutchings said that Mnce 10 das ago, when the state livestock sanitary board adopted the ban, Indiana has had only one new positive case of anthrax.: Ai the same time, he said, the disease spread to 10 new Ohio which have no such order. The rendering owners, anxious to resume business, were told the emergency restrictions would be lifted if, the plants take safeguards to insure & “safe” product. ■ State Rep. Ketaneth F. Blackwell (R-Franklin) asked Governor. Schricker If he would appropriate money from the! state’s contingent fund to help finance the livestock sanitary board’s rendering plant inspection program. “If the board will approach me on some of its need!s. maybe we can work that out,” Schricker said. “I would be glad to lend a sympathetic ear.” ; Rep. Harold P. rteavilon (RFrankfort) said rbndOrers were interested in suggesitbns for reprocessing the feed without destroying its value. He said they were anxious to cooperatie and would comply with regulations. Tests of from animals in other counties are being made today to trhce and eliminate the disease from Indiana.
