schools,’ - \ “Mr. Dawaid recommended to me that I serve notice to the Amish school board, and ask them > to show that their school is pro--1 iding instruction and facilities equal to that of the Adams county schools. "‘I am not a law enforcement officer, however, since I am under the direction of the state superintendent of public ihstructidh, I will again, contact the state superintendent for further advice in this mat|er.” Dawaid returned a bond the Amish school hoard members had posted and criticized them for operating a school “far below state standards in all respects.” Another suit \ charging David Girod, 21, son of Amish Bishop Peter Griod, with teaching German to the pupils in violation of Indiana law is pending. Girod opened the school for 30 pupils last fall in a summer kitchen on the family farm. I He was fined $25 and costs by Dawaid last month on the charge but signed a stay of execution bond and indicated he may appeal to Adams ciretfft court. j < The first trucks in, the United , States were made in 1904. Four Persons Killed In Apartment Fire Crowded Building v In Chicago Fired Chicago, April 3.—(UP)—Four persons were killed when fire swept a crowded apartment building and a three-year-old boy remained hospitalized in critical condition today. Michael Casey Nichols was taken to St. Mary’s hospital after he was removed from the buildingJn which his nine-month-old brother. Melvin, and his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Loucks, 54, died. Mrs. Ixiucks and Melvin were trapped in their third-floor apa|iment by the blaze which firemen said started, in, a heap of rubbajh in the baselment. The other dead were identified as Miss Bonnie Laiske, 35, and Lonnie Preslie, 55.. v The flames in the basement ignited a 500-gallon tank of ail which exploded sending a sheet of fire up the read of the building. Six firemen who battled through the smoke and flame : filled halls to rescue occupants of the northwest side building, were overcome by smoke. , A tenant, Robert Olszewski, was sitting in his room when the fire started. “I heard two or three explosions and without thinking about anything I ran out the hack door and down the fire escape. If I’d haV*4 thought about it longer) I would have stopped and taken nfy citizers ship papers and my new S4QO vision set.” Olszewski was left with nothing but the colthes he was wearing Everything in his flat was d& stroyed. The woodcock never sees what it eats. It drives 'its 3-inch bill into the mud and the highly sensitive tip feels earthworms upon which it feeds. • ,
