Nation's Telephone Bills Up Tonight Interstate Toll P Calls To Increase .*• Washington. Feb.j 2F. — (FPI — Tile nation's telephone bill will take a $14,5(>0,000-a-year jump at midnight tonight. .. | i Effective then wflli be new rates _pn interstate toll rajlls over, lines of the American Telephone & Telegraph Co. and associated companies in the Bell system. There will be increase of 5 to 10 dents for initial periods on calls up to 582 miles, most of the added costs being on calls up to about 30 miles. There will be corresponding increases for time beyond the initial periods. .1 ■ The new rate schedule provides for decrease? on calls over dis- 1 tances. greater than 582 miles, although they are sizable chiefly on calls over 1,000 miles, j These rate cuts range from 5 to 15 cents, with the greatest decreases being on calls over the greatest distances. The increases are expected to yield about $22.25b,000-a-yeur in new revenues, and the decreases are expected to amount to $7,750,000. This leaves a net. hike of $14,500.000. - , J The changes are designed to offset about half of additional costs being imposed on interstate operations as a result of new cost allocation procedures worked out by the compares, the federal qommunica1 tions commission, and the states. According to the commission, the revised schedules will "lessen substantially" the number of cases ! wlierq intrastate long distance I rates are, higher than interstate rates for equivalent distances* T —. The yucca plant served the prehistoric inhabitants of New Mexico of food, for scandals, cordage, baskets, matting, doth. fish nets, head riijgs and straps, ‘brushes and ■ erffdles.
