The Hartford Gorillas, Adams county champions and one of the favorites to -cop sectional -honors, hurdled their first* test of the Decatur, tourney Tuesday night, hut had to battle all the way p gainst a lidrd-fighting Berne Bear , outfit before edging out a 50-48 - decision. And- the Gorillas, badly crippled ■with. Jack Meyer, the county's leading scorer still mighty weak after a bout with* the flu, bounce light back intq.. action tonight, tangling with the defending champion Decatur Yiefllow Jackets at b: 1& o’clock. The Geneva Cardinals and Monmouth Eagles will open tonight's two-game schedule, starting the festivities at’ 7 o’clock. Early eliminations will be comp’eted Thursday night with two games, the Decatur Commodores n eeting the Pleasant Mills Spartans at 7 o’clock, followed by the Adams (Central Greyhounds and the Jefferson Warriors. There will be no games played Friday, with the day devoted to the sale of tickets for Saturday’s semi-final and final games to the fdns of the four schools left in the running after tohight’s and Thursday’s tilts. \ * Tonight’s winners will meet in the first semi-final at 1 p. m. Saturday, with the Thursday winners, c lashing at 2:15. The afternoon winners will meet for the sectional championship at'B:ls Saturday. Berne lost a golden opportunity ‘to move ahead when the Bears muffed three Consecutive free throws. Diqk Ziegler broke the deadlock with a foul! toss and Jerry Augsliurger drove under to restore the Gorillas’ three-point bulge. . Sprunger and -Xugsburger traded two-point-ers but Berne's hopes faded as Faul Sprunger committed Ills fifth foul, with three minutes to play.
