Urges U.S. Follow Ideals Os Lincoln School Segregation Lashed By Chapman Springfield,,.lll., Feb. 12.— (UP)rSecretary of interior Oscar L. Chapman called on Americans today to live up to the 1 treats of Abraham Lincoln by doing away with segregation in schools. *' In a speech prepared for Lincoln ; day celebrations, Chapman praised the Civil War president as a man who worked “for a peace which would create unity among men and extend the area of human freedom.” Unfortunately, he said.khe peace which caine out of the vil War was not Lincoln's peace and there- , fore the problems he faced are still here. \ “We still have to take our stand for the noble solutions Lincoln stood for,” Chapman said. “We still need the broader unity which comes- of full understanding and tolerance. We still need to remove the which exist: between large groups of wr people.” l ' One way in which he said Amerit cans can remove such inequalities is by ending segregation in its educational facilities. , , “If we are to be true to the ideals of America, we can never permit tax-supported facilities to be used on a segregated basis,” Chapman said. “When we do that, our government itself is violating one of Lincoln’s great principles. “In the end. we shall' not have complete freedom in this country until we learn to handle this whole problem of segregation on the basis of the simple ideals of Christian- ‘ i; - v "' - i - Chapman said the United States . must also aim for establishing Lincoln’s goals of unity and human freedom in its foreign policies. He. said those were the aims Woodrow Wilson struggled for ; ?in the peace after World War I but he lost that battle. “What the world wants is precisely what men wanted in Lincoln's * day and in Wilson’s —the chance to attain the kind of unity in which men can work and live together in peace and ttte chance to win a freedom that shall apply to all men of all races and colors _and creeds with an end to exploitation and injustice,” Chapman said. — .
