111 I SW—■ United Press Writer Picks New Albany ; (Editors Note: As sure 'as February rolls around, every Hoosier sports writer climbs out on a limb and tries to prophesy the outcome of the state high school basketball tourney. In the following dispatch, Indiana sports editor Kurt Freudenthal of the United Press makes his annual plunge, hoping to do as well as he did in 1950 when he hit Madison • right on the nose—or at least as well as in 1951 when his Lafayette Jeff Broacos went to the “final four?’) , ' : ’— i By Kurt Freudenthal Indianapolis, Feb. 12.—(UP)— They’ve been knocking on the gate since ’4B, but never got in. They’re still hot favorites, those torrid New Albany Bulldogs. Who today became the United Press choice to win Indiana’s high school - basketball tournament — Hoosierland's most famous athletic event. Twice the southern Indiana hotshots reached the round of the final sou last time in 1950 — but both times they were denied. This season they’ve beeh beaten only by East Chicago Washington ahd currently are leading the U.P. weekly honor roll. The record speaks for itself.-In [ 16 garfies, the Bulldogs averaged 73.6 points, while holding their op- . ] ponents to 54 per game. They're unbeaten at home in 47 consecutive games—a string which began in December, They’ve got height, balance, a typical dowustate .fast-break, a fine scoring punch and tremendous, rebounding power. < New Albany has been tough to beat the last five years. “We’ve been tough because £

believe in giving the fahs their money’s worth," «ai d 1 Gordon Raney, their pint-site coach. “We play every ganje to win...” f h Raney, who becaine a hardwood hot-shot at Jeffersonville and later starred at Hanover College, cab floor a starting five averaging nearly six-foot-two in height, aft of the “hit-and-run" variety. i ; "I have six good dependable boys, and they are all shootefe, have height and speed,” thM bespectacled mentor explained, “our boys are thinkers who play very cool. I am sure if we have any breaks along the line' this team can handle the (tourney) situation.’” But Raney knows the, tourney trail is rough. New Albany’s path leads through the stony Jeffersonville regional, where besides a rugged host, capable teams from Bedford and Seymour could break up the works. And the bloomington semi-final session ukixdlly, always serves up a surprise or two, "Any ball club can have a hot night,” Raney added thoughtfully. The Bulldogs, perhaps their best club yet, are built around six-foot-four Jim McLaughlin, their senior center. Frank Stemle their most cohsisten scorer, and Bill ; Maetschke, both about six-foot-three; share the forwards, and Bob Led* ford and Bill White, five-foot-19 and six-foot-one, respectively, usually Start at guard. They’re fast and rugged and above all, eager to bring the first state crown to their basketball conscious city. 1 fl — Adams Central Plays Chester February 20 Max Stanley, coach of "the AdanM Central Greyhounds, announced today that the Greyhounds will play the Chester Center Indians at the Pleasant Mills gymj ; Wednesday night.
