Commodores Lose To Ossian Bears, 66*58
Commodores • Defeated In Close Battle I The OssiHfi Bears put a clamper | on the Decatyr Commodores homeicoming celebration Thursday night, aa the Bears raced to a 66»8 yjptory i» a hard-fought battle pt the Decatur gym. The game was < close struggle *ll the way, wtifi the Wells county team pulling away only In the last two mipytes of play. Ossian, incidentally, is the Oply teaaj hpldfng a victory over the Hartford Gorillas this season. The first quarter was a see-saw affair: the lead changing hands pine times, with Tom Jpsee’s field goal putting Ossian in the lead at {he end of the period, 11-10. The Bears pulled away slightly |n the second quarter, twice taking aeven-polnt leads, but the Commodores came back to cut the margin to only two points, 28-26, at the- half, with Francis Coyne and £teye Gass leading the rally. The Commodores finally caught the Bears with a minute to play in \he third quarter, as Coyne <!rove under for a field goal and ftddedx a free throw when fouled ph the shot, patting Decatur on top. $5-43. Max. Baumgardner’s fielder tied the count but Coyne |jit again and Baumgardner's foul toss left (he Commodores with a 47-46 advantage at tiue -end of the period. -r The teams were tied at 49-49 gfter two minutes ot the final quarter elapsed, but Coyne hit two quick ones for a 53-49 Decatur lead. Ossian worked into a 55-55 |ie and then wept ahead to stay jss Boyd Byerly and Jerry Van jMf ter connected from the field. Coyne wgs outstanding \on offense for the Commodores, ripping through the Ossian defense for easy layups to rack «p 25 points " on 16 field goals and five free throws. Steve Gass tallied 15 and Louie Laurent'll. Byerly topped Ossian with 17. .
