Ted Williams Retailed For Marine Duty Boston. Jah. io,—(UP)—General manager Joe Cronin of -tMe Boston Red Box gave his answer today to the question of the entire bashball world was asking: “Does Ted Williams* retail to the marine corps mean the end of his career?” He .said that it would require “a miracle” for Williams to 'comp, hack in 1954 but “Ted might do it" ' ’ "It la hard to virTOalire Ted coming out of the service and retuning as a star at the age of 36,” Cronin said. /‘The odds are ob vkmsly heavily against him.” "hut,” Cronin continued, thrusting out his claassic Irish jaw, “if Ted Williams sets his mind to doing something, he'll do It.” Cronin said Ted’s sudden call might force the rich Boston club, had no Warning, to make a player deal and said he will confer with manager Lon Boudreau about a possible trade in Sarasbta, Fla., next week. But he.added sadly, “it is obvions that you cannot replace a man Jlke\ Williams.” "Williams did hot talk much about the future when he called me from Florida after hearing the news,’’ Cronin said. "He just said he’d go to spring training and do as tpuch as he could tor the team in the early season.” Ted probably won’t have much time to help the Sox. He is scheduled to report to Squantum naval air station for a physical examination on. April t and, H found physically fit, will report to the Willow Grove naval reserve base on May*. Williams* return to his-country’s service <lll be a severe blow to the stat’s pocket-book. As a marine captain* Ted will earn about|7.2oo a.year compared to the 389,960 the Red Sox paid him.. Crotoin said Ted’s 1952 contract was in the mails and that he would receive it in a day or two *'bufc that he might as well tieaFtfiip." . Williams served from 1943 through 1945 as an instructor for navy- and ' marine 'fighter pilots and compiled 5 a standout record. He was i stationed at Pensacola, Fla*, during most of World War'll. bowling scores WOMEN’S LEAGUE : ? \ Standings Fairway 34 11 Old Crown - - 30 IS McMillen ; 30 18 Hoagland Lumber — 29 19 Schafer 1. 28 20-Hitt-Smith .’ - 28 20 Three Kings 27 21 Kent 25 23 Bank ...... 25 23 Ptfeble I ... 24 24 Rosie ....J ...... . ......... 24 24 Hayloft ' - 23 - ,25
