Charles Whips Joey Maxim In Bruising Bout ‘ 1 Ban Francisco, Dek 13.—(UP)— Former.; heavyweight champion ! Ezzard /Charles was fit and readv today to make a liar out of the guy who said, never come back.” The Cincinnati negro gave notice last night that he was not to be stopped on the comeback ; trail , when he belted out a clerft-cut decision over light-heavy champion Joey Maxim in a bruising blit dull 12-rounder at the San Francisco Cow Palace. The victory,; Charles’, fifth against Maxim, was a long step back for the man who fell heir to Joe Louis’ titje only to lose it to aging Jersey Joe Walcott. The fight, witnessed by an estimated SBO,OOO house in the echoing horseshow arena in addition to several million television fans outside the 400-mile *radius of San Francisco, ’ was not a howling financial success. But it meant more than money to Charles. It meant he may be the first man ever to tcome back and regain the ■ heavyweight crown. The bout was a bruiser, but it .was no fun for the audience —and the crowd showed its displeasure tvith the same boos, clapping and catcalls might give a couple of second-rate wal.tzers. 'J ' Maxim, who looked every inch a champion when he recently boxed the ears off IrUh Bob Murphy. , showed little or none of his fancy work last night On the United Press score card he won only two of the 12 rounds. Two were even and the rest went to Charles without question. ’ Referee Jack Downey, who warned Charles several times for low blows, gave the former heavy king 6716 points to 64% for Maklm. Judge Billie Burke gave Charles 68% to 63% for Mixim. and judge Frankie Brown called it 70 for Charles and 62 for Maxim. Charles said the fact he weighed i in at 190 pounds, the heaviest lor any fight,\ may have acounted for. some of the slow-going. His manager. Jake Mints, said he thought the ring mat was too thick. \ Maxim scaled 178 pounds for the match. J Mints said Charles would mee‘ Walcott for the championship in either February or March, the exact time and place to be decided by the International Boxing Club.
