Alabama Lumberman Aided By Boykin ' Two Bank Officials, Lumberman Arrested f Washington, Dec. 13.—(UP)—An Alabama lumberman, arrested by the FBI, ' had a contract to cut 1 timber from the land of Rep. Frank W. Boykin when the Alabama Democrat helped him get a I 3456,758 "bailout” loan from the I RFC. - This is revealed In information locked in the files of the senate’s , permanent investigating committee which is looking into Opera- , tions of Stutts Lumber Industries, Inc., Thomasville, Ala. investigators alteo have other evidence showing Boykin’s interest in the r ‘ ■ X Boykin admitted in Mollie, Ala., last night that he helped lumberIman W. P, Stutts get the loan from the Reconstruction Finance Corp, in 1949, but said the case was a “clean as a hound’s tooth;” “I tried to help Mr. Stutts just as I would ahy friend and constituent,” Boykin said. “He put up two or three times the amount of the 'loan in collateral.’’ Boykin has-been mentioned in the tax scandal investigation by a house ways and means submittee , as having an unusual interest in the so-called Rippe-Mitchell tax evasion case in Alabama. Stutts and ’two bank officials were arrested yesterday by the FBI at Thomasville, Ala.* in connection with an SBO,OOO bank overdraft which the FBI said was used ’ largely to finance the company’s operations. i \ Arrested with Stutts were J. ’ Moody Drinkard, president of the Thomasville Bank and Trust Co., and his cashier, Mrs. Myrtle N. 1 McCrory, a stylish widow. • Although Boykin has no known connection with the bank, both it ■ and the lumber firm are in his • southern Alabama district. The Stutts firm got a $455,768 i RFC loan on July 16, 1949, only I three days after its application was r received in Washington, RFC rec- ■ ords disclosed. The senate’s permanent invest’.- . gating committee, headed by Sen. ‘ Clyde R. Hoey (I>N.C.). has been 5 keeping an eye on the Stutts case t for weeks. Chief counsel Franclp D. Ohlef Fisher is spending a great deal of time these days trying to push bis two pet objectives: and hetli are fire trucks. One of the trucks would be utilized! entirely for rural fire fighting, and the chief points up the need for another truck In the city. At present, firemen admit they ere fighting fires outside the city under a handicap: the lack of available water. This was pointed up too well recently when a church in Kirkland township was razed because the department was not equipped with a proper water supply. “If we have to go to rural fires,” the chief hau Hated, “then we should go prepared.” .'I ■' - '*
