Y , . \ I By Hoagland - / y -•*' iA'i-.' ’ 1 * • :~ ■’ ’’-A The Decatur Commodores, battling all the way against superior height and -weight, nearly upset the updefeated Hoagland Wildcats at the Decatur gym Tuesday night, with only a last minute ,field; goal by Ray Franke giving the ,\7len co'unty quintet a 42-40 victory, which extended seasob’is undefeated string to eight in a low. The 'first quarter, was nip and tuck,, with the Commodores holding an 11.-9 edge. The Denature, lads, playing their first ;, game without the services of Jijn Wilder, their leading scorer, piled up 15 points in the second period,to Only seven for Hoagland, and the Commodores left the floor at the hplf with a 26-16 bulge. ■ Decatur, however, failed to hit a field goal in the third quarter, tallying only five free throws, as\ Hoagland moved'into a 32-31 margin as the game entered the final eight minutes of play, 7 lead UT3B-32 after a minute and a half bitt four consecutive free throws by Steve Gass when he was twice fouled in the act of 'shooting <ut the margin to 38-36 after three minutes. Ted Emehhiser converted a free throw on Gass’ fifth personal but Coyne hit from the field to cut _ the lead to one point. Emenhiser counted another foul shot but Ed Wilder hit from underneath to knot the count at 40-40, with two. minutes to play. Both teams missed opportunities to- score Until Ray Franke hit from long range with only seconds to play- The Commodores got onp long- shot which went wild as the game ‘ ended. / The game’s scorers were led by Gass with 15 points,’ nine of them on free throws in 12 attempts. Hartford's Win String Hartford’s Gorillas suffered their first loss of the season after seven victories in a rbw Tuesday night, dropping a 64-52 decision to the Ossian Bears on the Ossian floor. It was a bard fought battle until the final period. The score was knotted at 17-1 J at the first quartet, Hartford held a -slight lead of 32-30 at the half, but the teams were tied again at the third period, 46 r 46. \ Ossian, however, tallied 18 points In th final quarter whila holding the gorillas to six markers.
