Detroit lions Edge Rams To I Lead Division ]'■■ - New York, Dec. 10—(UP)—The stage was set today for a frantic finish in the national conference of the National Football. League as three teams scramble" fort the right to play the Cleveland Browns /or the league championship. |■ The mighty Browns, of courae, aren’t scrambling at all. The defending who hofre to gain their sixth straight .[pro crown, clinched the American conference title yesterday with a 28-0 win over Pittsburgh and can use next Sunday’s tilt against Philadelphia as a tune-up. 1 j • But next Sunday grim business is in store for the Detroit Lions, Tx>s Angeles Rams, and Chicago Bears —the three bitter rivals: for the national conference title._ ; | Right i now. by virtue of their spine-tingling 34-22 win over the < Rams yesterday, the Detroit Lions are oh top by a half-garde, blit the driver’s seat they’re perched ifabis mighty shaky, to say the least. — The Lions have one big advantage—they can clinch the title by a win over San Francisco in the wind-up. The Rams, who play Green Bay, > and the Bears, who meet the Chicago Cards, haven’t got a chance unless the Lions lose. But the hitch is that the Lions could very easily lose. They droprod a 20-10 decision to San Francisc oin theiir Dec. 2 meeting, and that game was played in Detroit whereas-next Sunday the battle will be in San Francisco. ‘jj * But off the strength and savvy they showed in their big win; yesterday, the Lions appeared ready to take c barge of Be race. ; / They were trailing by 22-17 late in the fourth quarter, put jn that bad spot chiefly by the Rams’ Bob Waterfield, who booted five field goals. 1 The Lions took a kickoff and marched to the Rams’ 22 in five plays. With juat about; two minutes to play, Bobby Layne* handed the ball off to Doak Walker, who unleashed a towering; pass to end Leon Hart. The former Notre Dame star outraced the safety man and snared the pass in the end sone. * ‘ • The Bears kept their title hopes. alive by whipping the New York Yanks, 4SJ-21. It was a remarkable comeback for the Bruins, who took two of ti|e worst beatings in their history in the last tw«o weeks from tae Browas and the Rams. Johnny Lujack scored three touch-, downs t for the Chicagoans as the Bears pounced on every Yank: mistake, and there were many, .to make them count. . ~ TheV Browns found themselves held scoreless for one period by an eight-man gteeter line/ But they scored three times in the second, on a 24-yard run by Ken Carpenter. a rush by Marion Motley, jOtto Graham’s 15th touchdown pass, of the season. ' The San Francisco forty-niners, trailing by 13-10, came roaring back in the'second half under the brilliant quarterbacking Frankie Albert to beat the Green Bay Packers, 31 to 19; the New York Giants wallopedT the Philadelphia Eagles, 23 to 7, as Eddie Price gained 171 yards rttihing, ; Including an 80-yard touchown Jaunt; and the Washington Redskins beat the Cardinals, 2v-17, on Bill Dudley’s 18-yard field goal with 15 seconds to play.
