■ Creamedpil | Comments/MJ I on as.* <ol | Creamed comments on the Sun- * day school lesson, “Laws for the New Nation” (temperance), Ex. 19:7-8; 23:1-13, forj Sunday, November 18. The theme of the lesson is law and the truth that liberty without 1 restraint soon runs , into license— calls for moral responsibility. -T ' V.7. >And Moses came and called for the elders; of the people, ' and set before them all these words which Jehovah commanded him.’- These laws were designed to discipline the moral nature of Mthe’ Hebrews and t make them fit for their spiritual destiny as "a * kingdom of priests, and a holy nation.” * ’ V.B. “And all the people answered together, and said. All that Jehovah hath spoken we will do." The covenant was made dependent upon their obedience. This was a challenge to which the people re- [■ spended ’ V.i. "Thou shalt take up a false report: put not thy hand with the i wicked to be an unrighteous witIness.” The Bible teaches that , morai and spiritual’ laws are as definite and eternal * as those in the physical world. This law guards against slander and its circulation, making the inventor and’receiver of false .or slanderous reports equal criminals. | V. 2. ‘‘Thdu ehalt not follow a mutitude to do evil; j neither shalt thou speak in a cause to turn aside a multitude to wrest Justice.” The crowd; must not influence our decision*. Only a little encouragement of-the natural instinct to follow the crowd is needed to make it the dominant , principle in governing our behaviour. ! V. 3. "Neither shalt’ thou countenance a poor man i.n his cause.” They were not to be influenced by so-called great to make unrighteous ‘dMsions. A real friend of the poor realizes that the same justice must be accorded the rich .and poor alike. V 5.4,5. “If thou mpet thine c:iemy’g ox or his ass astray, ithou shalt surely bring it back to him again. If thou see the ass ol him that hateth thee lying under his burden,, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou »halt surely 1 help him.” Years later Jesus commanded such loving service to an enemy. be the reconciliation K of the enemies. V.I. “Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of the poor in his cause.” God is assuring us that he will approve only justice and righteous dealing with the poor. V.7; “Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous stay thee not: for I will not justify the wicked." If an " innocent man Is convicted and suffers death because of false testimony, the witness is guilty of his death before Clod. The social teachings of the Bible are far in advance of modern programs for social justice. V. 8.. “And thou shalt take no gift; for the gift hiindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.” Bribery is severely condemned. Why? It blinds the man who gives it, and perverts the one who receives it. V. 9. “And thou shalt not oppress a stranger: for ye know the heart of a;; stranger, seeing ye were strangers In the land of Put yourself in the place of a foreigne T or one of different race or color, if you would appreciate injustice. Having been delivered, Israel should be compassionate. V 5.10,11. "And si* years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in-the fruits thereof: Blit the Seventh year thou shalt let it rest lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner—with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard.” These versas give the law of the sabattical year. The Bible approves the -conservation of soil and always mercy toward the underprivileged. V. 12. “Six days shalt thou do thy work, and on the seventh shalt thou rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of ' thy handmaid, and the stranger may be refreshed.” God wants the , homestead to be refreshed; hence, his interest in man’s personal needs ahd those of the working animals. This involves both physical rest and spiritual uplift. V. 13. “And in all things I have said unto you be circumspect: ' and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.” Idolatry must be absolutely banished, —no mention even to be made of idols. Our idols today are th% desires of wayward hearts, and enterprises which have taken the place of God and our duty toward him. ’ —Based oh copy righted outlines produced by the Division of Christian Education, National Council of the Churches of Christ In the U.S.A., and used by permission. day will have no slipper, but will be a worship service in the church at 7:30. This is taught in the story of the ten lepers who were healed. When one returned to thapk Him; he asked where the other nine were. There ft no end to divine blessings which each one of us enjoys. The woe of it is that like the nine 1 neglectful lepers, we, too, fail to thank God. It is the old habit of just forgetting to say “thank you” constantly to one another and to God. -j—** 1 " »’ Leeton Prayer: We thank thee, Father, that thy grace, and power are sufficient for temptation, and that the good life erjen though costing self sacrifici, is worth everything it costs.
