New Excise Taxes In Effect Nov 1 Federal Taxes To Be Increased Next Week Washington, Oct. 25. —(UP)—■ It will cost you more to smoke cigarets, drive your car and drink beer, wine and liquor beginning next Thursday.' I j That’s because the federal excise tax on cigarets, gasoline, alcoholic beverages and a number of other items will be increased effective. Nov. 1-—along with your federal income tax. . All told, excise taxes will be boosted by a pet of 11,204,000,000 under the new $5,691,000,000 tax increase, bill passed by congress last week and signed into law by President Truman Saturday. There is a lot of bad news for taxpayers in the new law. There is gdod news, too. Not much, but some. For exanjple, it won’t cost quite as much to- send a telegram .beginning Nov. 1 because the excise tax will be reduced from 25 to 15 percent. Baby oils, baby powders and lotions no longer will be subject to the 20 percent tax on toilet preparations after Nov. 1, either. \ And chewing, and smoking tobacco and snuff will cost less. But the good news to be found in. these and a few other reductions is i more than offset by tax increases j or new taxes oh cigarets, liquor, ’ beer, gasoline, automobiles., some| electrical appliances, and many other items. The good news first: Chewing and smoking and snuff —cut from 18 to 10 cents per pound. U Electric bills—Present 3 H-)per-cent tax on electric bills repealed., Photographic apparatus and film —25 percent rate on apparatus cut to 20. But 15 percent tax on film! raised to 20. Apparatus and film' used In business —as by newsreel] and- newspaper photographers —. exempt from ] Beauty shop supplies—exempt' from the 20 percent cosmetics tax. Admissions —Sports contests by primary <ind secondary schools, civic symphonies, non-profit o pet as, otty-owned swimming pools, and entertainment programs of religious. charitable and educational organizations (not including movies) exempt from the 20 percent admission tax. Otherwise the admission tax is unchanged. Now for the bad news: Cigarets—Tax up One cetit a pack, from seven cents to eight. Liquor—Up 30 cents per 100 proof fifth, from $9 to SIO.OO per gallon. Beer —Up from $8 to $9 a barrel. Wine —Now 15 cents, 60 cents, or $2 per gallon, depending on alcoholic content; up to 17 cents, 67 cents, and $2.25. Passenger cars—Up from seven to 10 percent of manufacturer’s price (applies to new cars only). Gasoline —Up from l-% to two cents per galioti. , Parts and accessories—Up from five to eight percent; rebuilt parts and those used on farm machinery exempt. | Trucks, buses and tractors —Up from five to eight percent. Diesel suel —Not now taxed; new tax two cents per gallon. Electric, gas and oil appliances — present 10 percent tax rate unchanged but garbage disposal units, dishwashers, clothes dryers, floor polishers and waxers, home-type powe'r lawn mowers and home-type movie projects, added to | list of taxed. (Industrial type appliances not taxed.) ; COST OF (Contlnoed From Paso Oar) and other fall and Winter items. A fractional increase in average prices sent the food index to a feoint 119 percent above the preKorea level. Higher food prices I were reported in 33 of the 56 cities surveyed.. They were lower in 21. Chiefly were a six percent increase for eggs and fractional rises for meats, poultry and fish, dairy products, cereals and, - \bakery products,, COMMUNISTS (Coatinned From Pace One) cus tent opposite the four mudhuts I that comprise the village of Panmunjom. . ’ ’ ■nuofi JJSdR \ *• i f 1 ‘
