Points To Troubles From Rural Fires Local Department Is Not Equipped For lack of water the church was lost—and the fact pointed up the difficulties arising from niral conflagrations. , Because the Decatur fire department’s equipment is suited primarily for city fires, where an almost unlimited draper supply is available, rural fires must be engaged almost at the start. This was emphasized by Chief Cedrie Fisher today, who reviewed all the possibilities of subduing the Beulah Chapel Methodist Ichurch fire Sunday, The frame structure; one-half mile south of Preble, was completely demolished shortly before noon when an oil stove in the basement exploded. The and Poe departments were called were unable to extinguish the flames which shot up through the walls and consumed the entire building. “If we’d had just a few more gallons of water,” the chief said, “I think we could have controlled the fire.’’ However, the Decatur truck carries only a 147 gallon supply. Firemen. though, can 'utilize nearby ponds or cisterns when available; and pump water. Neither was at hand Sunday. \ The Poe department, which arrived later, is equipped for rural fires, but did not get to the scene in time. The Sunday fire added spark to the Preble drive for new fire fighting equipment, one designed especially for rural fires. One of the chief boosters of the project is Fisher, who sees a great need for the service in that community. ; ! “We can only accomodate those persons living outside the city when we answer a call; we can seldom assure putting out the fire

though,” the'chief Said. He Oftled there Were too many obstacle!: one of tljiem of course is the matter of time in getting to the scene; the other is the limited water supply normally encountered. “And it takes water to put Out the fire,” he said.’ ”We can answer the rural calls, but fre’re never sure we can do the work; We’re just not equipped’for it.” t
