The true Chiratian church is characterized by concern in interracial betterment,. inter-church lirotherhood. and \ international bpnevolence. ; V 5.27,28. “And in those days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. And there stood up one of. them named Agabus, and 1 signified by the Spirit that there Should be great dearth throughout all the world; which came to pass In the days of Claudios Caesar.” God in his goodness t las plrad leaders of the Jerusalem church io foretell the coming of a famine; steps need always to be taken for Social security regardless of not being anxious for tomorrow. > V. 29. “Then the disciples, every according to his ability, determined t° send relief unto the brethren whjch were in Jerusalem.” Evidently the famine would ti|t the Jerusalem, church the hardest. In Christian giving i,t wjas voluntary in which the whole church participated. How much each was tq give was determined by his ability to give. This sort of giving by the church resulted in establishing hospitals. orphanages. colleges, and many other organizations for the welfare of others. ' ' ■ V.l. “And certain men - which came down from Jerusalem taught the brethren and said, Except ye b» circumcised alter the manner of Moses, ye can not be saved. The Church has always been disturbed by teachers who were narrow. ii V. 2. “When, therefore, Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Bdrnabas, and certain other of tbfem, should .go to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.” Instead of having a split, they agreed to submit their problem to those in authority and prpceed by the way of a erice. " i V. 22. “Then it pleased 'the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their \own co - mpany to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Pudas, surnamed Barsabas, and | Silas, chief men among the brethren,” Instead of writing only to the' Jerusalem church, they planned a (.settlement \by means of per- .——— - TRINITY evangelical UNITED BRETHREN Madison at Ninth Jqhn E. [zonal contact. U is never wise to write a disputant when he can be seen In gnd talked with face to face. V. 23. “And they wrote letters by this manner: The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which pre of the Gentilps tn Aptioch end Syria and Cilicia.’’ Npte the kindly approach in the use of the word, “brethren,” and also in the greeting expressed as a salutation. iThe approach ip very important in the settlement Os dificulties. V. 28. “For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost and us A to lay upon you po greater burden than these necessary things.” Note the real authority is God, the Holy Ghost, and they were mere agents speaking for God. Note also thpt some burdens were to be acepted for there is spiritual value in carrying burdens. V. 29. "That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled and from fornioatipq; t from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.” It w-as a moral requirement that the Antioch church should keep itself tree from the pollution of idols and from fornication. In so doing, offenses would be avoided and time and effort could be put on saving faith in Christ..; ; Vs. 30.31. “So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch; and when they' had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle; which when-they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.” The Antioch Church as a whole was the recipient of the message from the head of the church; the right spirit was seen in that there was great rejoicing. Vs. 1,2. “For as touching the ministering to the saints, U is superfluous for me to write you; for I know the forwardness of your mind, for which J boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal hath provoked many.” Paul was a money raiser and used friendly rivalry as* a stimulus to get others to give. ' V. 5. "Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before you.” Paul planned wisely tn seeing to it that the pledges made would be collected and that he might be free to spend all his time in preaching to them? A wise church will let the laymen care for the finances with the inspiration of the minister who pan give ajl his time to preaching. —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Division of Chris tian Education, National Council of the phurches of Christ |n the U.S.A., and used by permission. and Youth fellowship. , t 7:3o—The evening service of gospelson g ad mehssage, "The Helping Hand.” : x j ' Wednesday —7 —Midweek service aith all four age-groups moot- : ing together. lyiiss Gwendolen ' Aeschlemag of Bern® and Misa Mary Archangelq of New Jersey will show pictures and review the work of the Appalachian Gospel Crusade in Abindgrion, Virginia.
