Parents Continue To Picket School Protesting Parents File Court Action Garrett. Ind., Sept. 12 —(UP)—Parehts of 10 families irritated with the education their children got in a one r room rural schoolhouse vowed today they will keep the youngsters home and block the school door "indefinitely.” The picketing parents, who prefer to call their congregation at the Schopf school a ‘line of protest,” met the school bus for the third day and told its driver he should return six pupils to their homes. . / The parents. banding behind PTA president John Buckles, didn’t like six grades being taught by one teacher, a gallon thermos jug of water rationed out to 31 pupils, or a mop pail used for washing hands. They filed court action yesterday demanding that Keyser township trustee Lester Snnjirr close the school and send their children to nearby Garrett “where the educational standards are much higher.” Buckles said the “very orderly” picketing would .continue until Smyrr Is forced to act. ‘Only one family is .actually resisting our protest,” Buckles said, '’‘and that’s the family who lives next door to the school. Their daughter can easily run home to a clean toilet and washing facilities.” Other children, he said, shared a thermos bottle of water provided by 'Smurr after the school’s well was contaminated. Buckles also said six grades under one teacher “is too milch for one man to handle the way he should.”, "Several books were never even opened last year because the teacher just didn’t have time to get around to all the subjects,’’ he said. , - Smurr termed the educational focilitles at Schopf “adequate." although he did transfer seventh graders to Garrett starting this fall because of what Buckles called “overcrowding.” “That didn’t help much,” Buckles said. “There were only two children in the seventh gradA." The PTA leader said two families who dispatched their offspring to school on the bus did so because the mother wanted to work and couldn’t stay home to care for them. — J - ......
