Newcombe in the first on Stanky's 1 single, and a triple by Monte Irvin. In each of the three games a quick first inning rally sewed up the victory. The Giants made it 2-0 yesterday in the seventh on a walk to Bobby Thompson, Wes Westrum’s sacrifice, Maglie's infheld out and a Newcombe wild pitch. Billy Cox spoiled Maglie’s shutout In the eighth with a homer. The Yankees made it three in a row over the Senators, winning 5 to 3. and cut Cleveland’s American league lead to a game and a half as one of their ex-colleagues, Tommy 05, Byrne of the Browns, snapped the Indians' winning streak at 13 games with a three-hit, 4 to 0 shutout. Rookie lefty Art Schallock won his first Yankee Victory as the New Yorkers made 12 hits including a homer by Gene Woodlihg and a double and two singles by Hank Bauer. Byrne gave up only' two of the three hits before he ha<J\to leave with a pulled back muscle in the eighth. He also chipped in with two hits while snapping Dale consecutive hitting streak at 23 games, Bobby Avila’s at 11 and AU Rosen’s at 10. Also of serious concern to Cleveland was the loss — I possibly for some time —of Larry Doby who pulled a leg muscle running out a first inning two bagger. The Athletics rapped out 14 hits to top the Red Sox, 10 to 2, wh|le the Tigers defeated the White Sox, 2 tn 1, as Dizzy Trout pitched sixhit ball and won his game with a homer. Gus Bernial hit his 25th homer for the A’s to tie Ted Williams for the league lead. Clyde Vollmer spoiled Bobby Shantz’ shutout with a two-run homer. In the the Cardinals topped the Pjrate'ace, Murry Dickson, 9 to 6,: winning with a! six-run rally in the seventh, while' at Cincinnati, the Cubs scored four j runs in the 10th inning to defeat the Reds, 8, to 4.
