CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN VIC AND TEX were silent for 'awhile after Tonto’s explanation of how Ruby might have killed Rick. At last Vic sighed deeply. "Sounds reasonable and adds up. But why ?” "I den’t know—yet," Tonto said wearily. \ "But, Tonto.” Tex said, “how about the time Bart was missing from the Golden and Ad Gilpin covered up for him?” *1 figure Ruby go’ so scared after she’ killed Rick that she blamed near lost her head. She needed help and she needed it fast. Naturally, she’d go to the gent who was loco-jealous in love with her. She had double-crossed Bart, but. she could trust him and she knew it. He’d do-anything for her. She went to the Golden and probably got ahold of Bart without being seen by anyone else. She told him what had happened, probably lied a little while she was at it.”_ "Then Bart slipped up here and made sure there was nothing to ’brand Ruby with the killing,” Tex said swiftly. “That’s about it. Bart took the whispers and pie talk, glad to protect Ruby and sure that now he needn’t worry about losing her again. She owed too much tb him, and he knew too much. Bart didn’t care what terms brought Ruby to him.” Tonto sighed, "I don’t blame him none, either. I’ve seen few like her." t “Yeah," Tex breathed and fell back. “I don’t eee why she killed Rick," Vic insisted stubbornly. “J reckon we’ll know soon," s Tonto answered. "1 saw the whole setup just all of a sudden while Bradley was talking. 1 knew about Bart’s threats but, until then, I’d , never put them whprs they ba- - longed. It came to mo back there in the olhce and thru everything fell tn line. It explains why Gilpin killed Old Baldy, The old man-saw Ruliy do the killing, not Bnrt. It ho talked, Gilpin's hold on Bart Was gone. Bo Baldy was killed." "I ley I” Ti-x up. ’Tlicri we ain’t after Bnrt Overby at all I" "Not for a murder charge. He was an aceeMocy, 1 reckon. It’s Ruby who'll face a• judge." 1 • “This ain’t gonna be nice," Vic growled and rode on. in a deep silence. • J ’. They came to- the fodc in the road and followed it-to’the deep cut. There was no fight to mark the shack and the surrounding trees were only a dark mass in the night. Vic drew rein and . stared at them and Tonto answered k his unspoken question.

"There’s only one path into ft. If they’ve not left, we’ve got them kittled.” ' ' ' “Lead the way." # I Tonto cut off the road, Vic and Tex following him. He-circled the big expanse of brush and trees, drifted in closer to find the trail. Only the slight creak of saddle leather and the dull thud of the horses’ hoofs broke the deep silence. Even the wind had died and the shadowy trees did not stir. . At last Tonto saw the darker maw of the opening through the brush and he waited for Vic and Tex to come up to him. Tonto loosened the Colt in his holstejr and headed into the passage, Vic beside him, Tex bringing np the rear. At last the trail opened onto the little clearing. ' Tonto drew rein, touched Vic’s arm and pointed toward the shackj Bulky shadows stirred and Vic had to peer closer to see that two horses waited by the door. Their quarry was Inside the shack and ready for the taking. At that moment the door opened and Vic sucked in his breath. Bart Overby and Ruby stepped out, and they each carried saddle rolls. Ruby waited by the door while Bart strapped on the first toll and then secured Ruby’s to her saddle. "No time to lose," he said "We want to be at the railroad by morning." "Can you ride?" Ruby asked. "Sure. The bandage will hold." "There’s no need to run, Bart. Whatever happened at Bradley’s office doesn’t change things for you and me." "Riley's no fool," Bart snapped. "Gilpin and Bradley have been playing for the Slash S and they've made a slip. Riley still has to find who killed Rick if he wants to keep the ranch—sven with Bradley and Gilpin out of the way. He’ll find out. By then we'll be gone." She said nothing more but swung Into the saddle, Bart picked up the dragging reins and threw them over the horse’s head, reaching up one long arm for the can Ur. Tonto nudged Vic and palmed his gun Into his hand. U "Stand where you are," Vic sang out. "Don’t move.” a Ruby twisted around In the saddle and Bart froze, chin lifting over his shoulder. Vic and Tonto stepped Into the clearing and instantly Bart's eyes centered on them. Ruby remained as still as a statue. “You’re both under arrest,” Vic called. “What do you want Ruby for?” Bart demanded. \

"For the murder of Rick Staples,” Tonto snapped. Ruby’s gasp sounded loud In the night. She slid out of the saddle. One moment she had loomed high and the next she was simply not t there at alt Bart wheeled, crouching low so that he was a part of the bulk of the horse. "Shoot-out!” Tonto hissed and faded to one side. A gun blasted and the bullet sang close, a little to one side. Tonto saw the lance of flame and knew that' Bart Overby had not flred that shot, ft was Ruby. Then .Eart’s gun came into play, flame 'lancing toward the lawmen. Tonto held his fire. He couldn’t shoot at Ruby, murderess or not He tried to work himself to a position where he could take- Bart out of -the game without harm to the horses. They snorted. One/of them wheeled and raced directly toward the trail entrance. Tonto saw Bart clearly limned against the lighter gray of the shack and he snapped a shot at the man. • He missed, but must have come close. Bart wheeled, «ent two slugs burning toward him. But Tonto had moved to one side. He heard Vic plunging off to the right and he wondered where'Tex was. Bart scuttled toward the house and then Vic’s Colt thundered. Bart stumbled, caught himself.' Ruby came racing out of the shadows from the corner of the shack. Tonto could have easily lined his sight on her, but he didn’t Something stopped him. She reached Bart, and bent over him. "Better surrender peaceful,” Vic called. "You cain*t get away." Ruby jerked around and her gmi backed.
