High Rent Problems Blamed On Military Rent Trouble Passed Back Into Army Lap , Columbus, Ind., July 11—(UP) —A chamber of commerce official tossed the problem of high rents here back into the lap of the anny today and said it was partly the y fault of the military. z j ■S. List Hoosier Among Wanted Fugitives; Ernest Tait Added To FBI Candidates Washington, July 11 — (UP) — Look out for a toUgh six-footer, slim and brown-haired, with a lisp. He 1 whistles disagreeably through his nose, too. He’s the latest candidate elected by the FBI to its list of the 10 most hunted fugitives. His name is Ernest Tait. He Is 40 years old and >is so chewed up that Jiis old gunshot wdunds get infected regularly. He has to have X-ray treatments {yr them. His latest job Was a guri.battle with police at New Castljd, Ind., on April 1. He got on the list as a fugitive from a federal charge of unlawful flight acrossj state lines to avoid prosecution in Im diana for ; burglary. He ik packing a .38 caliber revolver, .the FBI believes.. “Because of his cdihpletp disre-. gard for human life, the j utmost precaution should be taken with him,” the FBI said. He is “extremely danlgerous” and may fire on anyone trying to arrest him, the FBI added, reporting he also is adept w|th explosives, has “burglarized banks, associated with bank robbers, and is a well-known criminal.” Tait, who was born in Indianapolis, replaces <m the “most hunted” list one Anjihohy Brancato, a Kansas City, vjMo., hoodlum who surrendered to the FBI in San Fraitcisco ion June 29. Brancato stayed on i the list, only two days. He. was wanted lor' robbery in Las Vegasj, Nev. Tait's latest exploit at New Castle occurred when police caught him with a pal, Richard Schmidt, ' burglarizing an Elks lodge. T;|it was wounded btit kicked a lioliceman in the groin in a slugfest; and got away. Schmidt i‘s expected to be crippled permanently. He got a bullet through his liver hnd spine, The FBI said Tait may have shot nis partner to keep him from talkiiv* if caught. The FBI asked that anyone with information which may assist in catching Tait contact FBI director J. Edgar Hoover or the special agent in charge of the nearest FBI field office. He was sentenced to three to 10 years in the state penitentiary but escaped seven months later. Tait was arrested in 1938 in Chicago and sentenced to five to 25 years in the Joliet state penitentiary for unlawfully procuring explosives. When paroled by Illinois in July, 1949, he was returned to Indiana to complete his senteiipe. He finally was released in September, 1950. He has a pronounced lisp caused by a nasal condition which also causes a disagreeable whistling sound, the FBI said. Tali is snghtly over six feet tall and weighs 163 His liair is dark brown, bis eyes brown, and \ there are several , small moles on his forearms. He has five vertical scars below his left knee and a vertical scar between his pose and upper lip. The FBI said he. has certain habits which could lead to his capturd.
