Whalebone Scarce The Influence of human fashions in the era of women’s garments in the eighteenth century led almost to the 'extinction of the great Greenland whale when the price of whalebone rose to more than $1,400 per ton. Steel and plastic stays, now replace whalebone for stays in corsets, and fine whalebone, used for other purposes, now brings the much higher price of some $5 a pound because of the scarcity of the species of whales that produce it. ■ ; Protect Wells Springs and wells should be protected from surface water to avoid pollution.
