I Over a period of a hundred years, remnant of Judah, jabout 60,000. to return to Jerusalem, the different characters involved being Cyrus of Persia, now world emperor; Darirus and 'Artaxei. his successors; Ezra, the scribe! and <Nehemiah, a good layman giving ; inpiratlon. and instruction; an 4 the phophets Taggal and Zechariah; !V. 2. Note the;new name to the children of Israel Jew; the people had changed much while in captivity, and it was appropriate that they should haVe another name; in fact, the majority of those gone into'exile did not; care to go back home; human nature is like that todky - believers in God get so mixed up with the world that the desire to {change is not strong; the start home has to be voluntary, then and now. V. 14. “And the elders of Jews bUilded, and they prospered through the prbphesying of Haggai the phophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they;' builded it and finished ft, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandments of Cyrus, Darius add Arttxerxos.” These prophets Encouraged the people to resume the rebuilding of the temple after the work had been stopped by the Samaritans, and after the temple had lain uncoin-

t , . . I pletvd tor fifteen year*. People Ito be faithful to God need a lot of encouragement. V. IS. “And the house was finlahwhich was in the sixth year of the ed on the third of the month. Adar, reign of Darius the king." The time it took to rebuild the temple, was tour years and five months. The Persian kings directed the giving of much material and funds; the sacred vessels taken in the captivity were brought back. It is a credit to people to build well the house of God. \ V. 16. ’’’And the children of Israel, the priests and the Lsviton, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept tile dedication of this house of God with joy." There was great satisfaction in mikiua fifst things first, namely, honor in 4 God and making .the worship of him tirst. There Is real joy connected with the true worship of Go 4. V. 6. “So built we the wall; and -all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof, tor the «m> pie had a mind to work." Nehemiah, the cupbearer of the kin.', was greatly dlstresumd in that the walls of Jerusalem were in need of repair. With the consent of ths king, he took 1500 men to Judul. to do this task, where he mat all kinds of difficult opposition by enemies, but he stuck to his job. The people of /'Judah were inspired to work even without pay for protection. There is a spiritual reward for ti e Christian worker. V. 1. “And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the Water (gate; and -they spake onto Ezra thescribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded In Israel.” With their new achievements, tho people had a new purpose to live for God in their repossessed ?ity. New mercies should always lead to new consecrations. They were ready for a revival which was to be based on the word. Ezra was an 1 outstanding interpreter of the word. Having been in captivity so long, their understanding was darkened and thoy craved the right interpretation of the word. So eager were they to learn about 1 God that they did not weary because of a service several hours long. It is not a good sign that there is a craving for shorter services of public worship and shorter sermoas.
