Ex-Dancer Attempts ' .. ■ ’ ’ “ To Commit Suicide Spent Evening With Actress' Husband Beverly Hills, Calif., ifcay 9.— (UP)—An attractive ex-damcer who allegedly spent a gay eyening with the husband of Mary Astor the night the actress attempted suicide tried to kill herself last night with an overdose of sleeping drugs. Joan Blair Casparis, 33. was found unconscious in her room at the swank Beverly Hills hotel by assistant manager Warren Rock, who was. alerted by Miss Astor’s husband,, stock broker Thomas E. Wheelock. * \ ' Beverly Hills police said Wheelock came to the hotel at about 7 p.m. and told t we switchboard operator he had been trying to call Mrs, Casparis all day but her telephone was busy. \ , The operator checked the line and discovered the telephone was off the hook. *. Rock told officers he hurried to the room and found the dancer sprawled across her bed, the telephone clutched in her hand. He called police, who took the woman to a hospital. Police Sgt. Joe Gebhardt said the room was strewn with blue capsules, which medical technicians said apparently were sodium amatol. The woman, a former member of the dancing team of Baron and Blair, was rushed to California Lutheran hospital where attendants said she would recover. , She entered the Hospital under the name Joan Blair and was accompanied only by police, attendants said. Gebhardt said Wheelock told him he met Mrs. Casparis when she checked into the hotel Monday night, the night Miss Astor gulped 16 sleeping pills in a suicide try her doctor said resulted from "an emotional disturbance common to most women her age.” M|ss Astor, academy-award winner now 45, was reported resting comfortably today• in a hospital near the movie studio where she achieved some of her greatest sue- . Her personal physician, Dr. P. H. Stellar, said there was “nothing serious” about her mental depression, but we can’t talk to her now.” Miss Astor took a near-fatal dose of pills tn the Wheelock’s San Fernando Valley home after calling a Catholic priest. - - ?
