Four Seamen Die In Salvage Operations Seeking To Salvage Jet Plane In Lake Chickgo, May 7.—(UP)— The navy today held up until calmer weather work on "operation jinx” which cost the lives of lour seamen whp were trying to salvage a jet plane from the botton of Lake Michigan. ‘ \ Eight other navy men were i rescued after high wav|s swamped . their landing craft yesterday. The salvage party was working with a diver to get a ?ine on the wreckage of the FH-1 phantom jet fighter which went down 1,500 yards off the Northwestern University campus Friday. \ v The ’pilot of the plpne, which crash-landed as hundreds of students watched Friday, was listed as missing. It was not known whether his body was still in the’> wreckage. He was idenyfied as Lt. Laverne i Narbours, 30, of Lake Zurich, 111. The landing craft was the second boat in two days to upset while 'attempting to retrive wreckage. 'The navy identified t|iree of the four men missing and I presumed dead. Identification of the fourth was withheld pending Notification of the next of kin. Those identified were: A ■\ Chief boatswain’s mate Frank J. Plocki, 48, Albany, N.Y, coxswain of the landing craft. Britain Bans Some Shipments To China Statement Is Made On Trade With Reds London, May 7.—(UP)—Britain has banned shipment to Communist China of all goods “which inight assist China’? military operations,” but has not imposed a total embargo on trade, the government announced today. ’ I The announcement was made in commons by Sir Hartley Shawcross, president of the board of trade. Shawcross denied Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s charges that British goods were of substantial assistance to Red China’s armed forces. Shawcross said the British ban applied to all military equipment, airplanes of ail types, specialized motor vehicles rubber, ginc and its alloys, and a wide range of industrial goods, including machine tools, "It has not so far policy of the United Nation? to irqpose economic sanctions against Qhina and we have not ourselves | prohibited all trade,” Shawcross ‘said. “We have not imposed a :total embargo on trade with China as the United States had done. "We are, natprally, in close consultation with other friendly powers and our present practice is cei> tainly not less restyctiv? than that of other friendly countries, apart from' th? United States.” /Shawcross said determined efforts were being made to suppress smuggling to China.
