Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, The United Kingdom 11 Samuel 5:1-5;, 8:15; 1 Chronicles 22:17-19, tor Sunday, May 6./ - | In our study of the Old Testament we pass over the period of the Judges and have a lesson in which King David effects a united kingdom because of his success as a military Having won majny battles, he commanded the respect and devotion of all the tribes. He was God-fearing, with a religious experience as a sweet aipger of Israel, and with Justice and kindness tempered with good judgment. V. 1- “Then came all the tribes of Israel to David upto Hebron and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.” The principles of democracy were at work, so came to David to express the voice of all Israel. Kinship also entered into the choice. David’s capital at firstwaa at Hebron, but because of his military* victory over the Jebusites who held Jerusalem, he chose to make this city the capital, hence, it is often called the City of David. Y. 2- 'Also Intime past Saul whs king over us, thou waist he that leddest out and bfoughtest in Israel; and the Lord said to thee. Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shaft be a captain over Israel.” These people wanted to tie up with a ruler that tied up With God. National and international problems are solved when the rulers are men of God. V. 3, “And so all the elders caihe to the king in Hebron; and King David made a league with them In Hebron before the Lord; and they anointed David king over Israel.” Good government has a magna charta or a constitution defining powers and principles for a united society. David has been aoitfted before as king of Judah; under God former divisions were now abandoned. . - V. 4. “David was thirty years old when he began to reign and he reigned forty years;” David, in his prime, could givb a long reign to the people and solidify these divided tribes- There is power in unions There are so many things that ought to be done that are left undone- This situation can be remedied by the following program: try to do what you know how to do; then attempt what viou do not know how to do, for thatiis better but keep on until you learn how to do what, you do not khow how to do, is best of all. But, pf course, in things it ; is doing the right that counts. *—f FIRST METHODIST CHURCH W. Monroe at Fifth St, Samuel Emeriqk. Itha United States, the United NaHons, and powers because of har- • monious and close association of many people. 4 V. 5. “In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years overall Israel and Judah.” Caleb claimed Hebron and the surrounding territory as a promised possession and so now David continued in that relationship. There is a fine religious sentiment in holding sacred former places of worshipV. 15. “And David ieigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice to all his people.” David’s Administration of judgement was just and Impartial, and so he was greatly beloved. He was well named, David, the beloyed\ V- 17. '“David commanded all the princes of Israel to help Bolomon, his son, saying:” When it was made known that Salomon, his son should build the, temple, he graciously surrendered that honor and set about helping Solomon by commanding the leaders, the princes, to do the necessary preliminary service. David did his great work as a warrior, subduing the enemies: I God would not honor war as his ideal program, so he asked that David step aside for a son without ia war history. V. 18. “Is not the Lord thy God with thee? and hath he not given you re&t on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the Lord, and before people.” Note the word “rest.” Peace and rest to nations are found when there are no wars- j War creates a tension and fear,' and is costly in money and men so that many can not, rest at such times. » V. 19. “Now set your heart and soul to seek the Lord your God; ; arise, therefore, and build the j sanctuary of Lord our God, to. bring the ark of the covenant of the I Lord, and the holy vessels of.God, into the house .that is to be built to the name of Lord." The purpose of worship was foremost in David’s thought. Israels safety was in seeking the Lord and worshiping hhn. That is true today. 7 ' Sunday School comments based on the International Sunday Sbhool Lessons, copyrighted by the International Council of Religious Education.
