Wealthy Indiana Philanthropist Dead Ernest) Ms. Morris Is Taken By Death South Bend, Ind., May 3—(UP) .-—Ernest Mj Morris, 68, wealthy investment company executive and philanthropist and former Republican national committeeman from Indiana, died today in Memorial hospital. 1 \ ‘ ; f ■ Morris had'been ill only a week. Morris’ figured in one of Indiana's most Unusual political ■ incidents in history in 1J144. He had four years as GOP national committeeman and was up for reelectioh. But he lost to the late Robert W. Lyons of , Indianapolis, a wealthy corporation lawyer. Lyons’ c election created a storm of protest. Opponents charged he once was aljied with powerful Ku Klux Klan interests. A few days later, at a special meeting, Lyops resigned under pressure. Morris then was elected to succeed him. Morris’ philanthropies included 11,000,000 to the University of Notre Dame for ejection of an inn pn the campus. His generosity to a Catholic School —• although he was a Protestant —resulted in his election to the Notre Damp associate board of lay trustees two years ago. - ! <\ Morris founded tife Associates Investment Co. in 1917. It grew to the third largest independent finance cdpipany in the the time of his death, Mqrrls wgs chairman 6f .the company’s board. Born on a Marshall county farm, Morris worked at farm jobs until he waited enough togd to college. He entered Valparaiso University, was graduated in" 1905, and \ later went to Notre Dame law school for a degrep.
