KSiSSaSbM creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lbssbn, The Period of Patriarchs, Genesis 15:1-8; 17:519, for Sunday, April 15. j ( God planned to reign through patriachs as head of clans and nations. Abram was the first in the line of patriarchs and he was the first io demonstrate faith in God so that he is not only the father of the Hebrew race of all believers. V. 1. “And after these things, the word of the Lprd chine .to Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not Abram, I am thy shield and thy great exceeding reward.” Abranhadjust returned from rescuing Lot, showing himself unselfish, generous, and faithful to God. He was whiting on God and so it was easy to hear God Speak. He was promised a. shield - a shield of faith and a great reward to be explained later. V- 2. “And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me,! seeing 1 go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliexer of Damascus?” The thought seems to be, psf what avail are those things you have promised me. seeing I have no child to Inherit- them.” lEliezer was a slave and a poor substitute for an heir of his own. There are no substitutes in religion • \ none for Christ. V. 3. “And Abram said. Behold to me thpu hast given no seed; and 10, one born lb mine house" is mine belt.’’ Here was a note of discouragement, for he and his Wife wtere j too old for child-beiarlng; while a man of faith, like us; Abram needed a word from God to 'increase his faith.' . ■ ” i 1 [ V. 4. “And, behold the word of the Lord came unto him, saying. This shall not be thine heir; but that which shall come' forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.” God renewed his promise very definitely in such a 4ray that. Abram knew that i| was God who was speaking. V. 5. “And he brought him forth [ abroad, and said,Look now toward heaven, and tell the sta'rs,' if thou be able to numbed them; and he said unto. him, So shall thy seed be.” God increased AbVani’a faith' by the, permanency and nujnber of There is so much tension in the world that it distorts the necessary Christian faith which holds that God is good apd that; he has his hold on all things; his purpose runs through all events. We may notj understand the how pt it all but in some mysterious way God brings good out of trials, suffering, and even death. So one ought to have faith in God inat he can turn ovejr to Him the oqfcome of every 1 thing. , J ij; t Book Review "Higley’s Sunday ; School; Lesson Commentary, 1951, ion the Internationial Improved Uniform "Lessons, The Higley Press, has for Its outstanding appeal: Object lessons, illustrations in story form revealing the heart of ea<h lessoh, verste exposition with analysis, topical discussions with practical historic settings, daily Bible readings, seed thought tttd others. -fc- 1 ; .. / ■ 'i ’ '■' i ’ i i' ‘

I the stars visible. ‘ The exceeding great reward of Vhrse 1 would be fulfilled in due time. V. 6. “And be believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for ! righteousness.” Here is a great; I experience of faith with the reward of righteousness. ' V. 5. “Neither shall thy name any more be called Abriid, but thy name shall be called Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee." Hip first name, Abram, meant exalted father, Buet the name, Abraham, is more fitting for he shall be the father of many nations. Like Abram, faith in Christ makes for a new name, Christian, because, like* Abram, believing faith is exercised. V. 6. “An,d 1 will make thee exceeding fruitful,. and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.” Abraham was the father of other nations the Israelites, namely, the Ishamaelites, the Edomites, and various tribes froth'his children by his wife Keturah - Geh. 25:1-14. A long line of kings followed him . prorhinent among them were David and Solomon. ,V. 7.. “And , 1 will establish my 'covenant between me and thee, and thy seed after thee in their genera, tion for the everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after The covenant thbt God was noVr making would hold good throughout all years to Come. All that any nation could rightfully expect of God was here promised. Here was a program -of faith. V. 8. “And 1 will give unto thee, and thy seed after thee, ’the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.” Here is a repeated promise. The possession of Canaan was conditioned on faith so that wherji the • Israelites forgot God they Josd out. V. 18. “And Abraham said unto Gqd, O. that Ishmael might live before thee.” There was an attachment to this child and the human interest, longed for a regard. We need to watch our human interests and not allow them to get between us and God. In the following verse,' Goji made plain his will in the birth of sa true heir, it is always God’s will for man. \ Sunday School comments based on the International Sunday School Lessons, copyrighter by the international Council .of Religious Education. , y. ericusSays: ciericus says: “We need to more and more on the promises of God. It is only as we fail to do this that we become perturbed and districted with the issues of life. God’s grace is sufficient unto every need, and he is able to do far more than we thipk or ask.” Lesson Prayers Lesson prayer: We aie grateful for such lives as Abraham whose faith in God brought rich rewards. Grant that our ( faith tn God may he Increased and-, that we may he kept steadfast, leaning oh God’s hofy promise for our welfare.
