Dr. Robert Rutledge Is Suicide Victim Prefers Suicide To Serving Prison Term Houston, Tex., April 6.—(UPX— Beautiful, tawny-blonde Sydney Rutledge had only memories today—memories, and a letter that said “love is a fleeting thing at best and'time will cure a lot of grief.” “ They were all that remained of her life with Dr. Robert C. Rutledge, Jr., who was convicted of killing her alleged seducer to retrieve her honor. Rutledge, 29, committed suicide yesterday rather than return to lowa to serve 70 years in prison for killing Byron Hatt man in 1948. His six-foot-tall wife collapsed Wheij she heard' about Jxis death. , In a letter which he sent to he;r through the mails, Rutledge let his statuesque 25-yearold wife know that his thoughts were of her aqd that he was taking his own life in the belief that “it is the best for you.” "Dear Diddy,” he wrote.’ "Sorry to run out on you like this but think it is the best for you. There is a good future for you if you can forget about this.. 1 “Love-is q fleeting thing at best and time will cure a lot of grief.” Shortly after Mrs. Rutledge received the .letter, the young doctor’s body, was found about 6 p.m. slumped in the front seat \<bf his automobile, on a little-used road near Hoiistjon. A new Section of garden hose carried carbon monoxide from the car’s exhaust to the front window where Rutledge had sat with the hose in his mouth, inhaling the deadly fumes. A coroper said he was dead for •12 to 15 hours when found, indicating the >yell-liked child’s specialist had elected to kill himself only a few hours after the lowa supreme court upheld his conviction for stabbing Hattman to death in a hotel room at Cedar Rapids, la., on Dec. 13. 1948. His suicide fulfilled a date Rutledge made with death four days after the killing when officers went to arrest in St. Louis. At that time, he went to a bathroom as officers waited and swallowed poison. He was tak6n to a hospital, and recovered. i Mrs. Rutledge was in such a state of shock that doctors kept her under sedatives today. Rutledge’s suicide climaxed a chhin of tragedies that began in the summer of 1948 when, she said
