Four Os Neighbors ■ ■ ' I'■ v Wild Revenge Orgy : i By Missouri Farmer '’ \ ' ■ \ ■ Marshfield, Mo„ April 4.—(IIP)— A 24-year-old farmer shot and'killed four members of a neighboring family and fired 14 shots at another couple in a wild orgy of revenge because “they didn’t like mi”. \ Kenneth Eesery sobbed in a jail today as he confessed tp kill ing William T homas Shockley, 43. his. wife Clara, 44. their daughter Bele©, 16, and Shockley's mother, Mrs. Martha Ellen Shockley, 75. “They were all good people,” he cried. “But #foey didn’t like me.” He refused to give- sheriff E. I. 1 Cunningham any further explanation. \ 1 ’ “f only remember shooting Bill Shockley,” Essery said. “Bul ( I must hgye killed the others, too.” The shooting occurred at' Shockley’s farm four mileis southeast of nearby Conway, Mo., in the rugged Ozark bills of—southwestern Missouri. Essery made no attempt to harm , Shockley's nine other children.' most of whom were asleep when he appeared at the' house last night. 1 Helen was killed as she attempted to telephone her aunt’. Mrs. Luke O'Connor, who lives ort a nearby farm. \ - When she beard the shots that killed Helen and couldn’t get a respopse from the girl. Mrs. O’Connor called Cunningham' and then raced to the Shockley Dome with her husband. They arrived just as Essery was leaving after shooting the four persons. ' He fired 14 shots from his .22 caliber rifle at them as they crouched in rheir pickup truck. Neither was hit. Cunningham, arriving a fewjminutes later, found Helen dead with the telephone receiver still grasped in her hand. , Essery was suited at the home of his father. Bill, to whom he confessed the slayings. Medic's Conviction Is Upheld In lowa lowa Supreme Court , Upholds Conviction Des Moirjes, la., Apr. 4—(UP) — The' lowa supreme court today upheld the conviction of Dr. Robert Rutledge tor second degree murder in the hotel room slaying of Byron Hauman at Cedar Rapids. The high court ruled evidence in the case warranted the finding that Rutledge, li', “entered Hattman’s room' in his absence, and at his arrival feloniously assaulted and tabbed him with a knife.” At Rutledge’s trial, his tall, blonde wife Sydney testified that Hattman had seduced her. Rutledge said in his defense that he sought to settle) the matter with Hattman and a fight resulted. Rutledge was convicted m May, 1949,-of second degree murder and sentenced to 70 years in prison. He was freed on 140.000 bond last year and has been practicing at Houston, Tex., since his release. Hattmao was stabbed to death in the hotel roonr in December, 1948, and Rutledge was arrested later at his St. Louie apartment.
