Science Offen New Facsimile System High Speed System Is Revealed Today New York, March 14.—(UP)~ Science today offered a new sac simile a development that will transmit and record in finished form documents at 3,000 words a minute. ' The system, known as highspeed fax. requires no advance preparation or processing of the ma terial td.be transmitted. The first models are expected to be used by the armed forces. The system.can handle written matter, drawings and pictures. Officials of Western Union Telegraph Company, whosei scientists developed the' system, said it has the highest overall speed of any communications method Ip the wotld. It can operate either over wires or by radio beam ' < , As demonstrated here the capac-. Ity of the new system is so great that a 9(>page issue of a magazine could be flashed by facsimile.to any distant point in a single hour. 11. P. Corwith, development research vice president Os Western Union, explained that the method of transmission is simple. Material to lye transmitted is slipped into a horizontal transparent cylinder ana the end gate of the cylinder is closed. .As the gate closes, the machine goes into automatic operation. Corwith said that any length of page up to 1,4 inches can be sent. The cylinder with the \material to be transmitted whirls, and through use of a photo-electric eye the light arid dark sections of the printed page are picked up and sent by electrical impulses over either a radio beam or a wire circuit. At \ the' receiving end, the picture is reproduced dn dry paper with no developing necessary. The receiving machine also has automatic device that snips off the facsimile eppy and ejects it fro'm the machine. Western Union officials said, the system is capable of handling ma- 1 terial which cannot be transmitted over typewriter-telegraph or by telephone. They said the systei'u is well suited to sending and receiving commercial Correspondence, business forms\ complicated tabulations, sketches and illustrations.
