' - : The Jackets took the title in both 1949 and |950, t\hus tying the i mark s<ft in 1945 and 1946 by the Berne? Bears, the only other team to take two successive tourney crowns. In the 11 years the tourney has been held in Decatur since consi ruction of the new gym A five disJferent schools have viron the sectional diadem, with five (as , the Tiieet is now yet to sectional victory. , I Schools which have held a championship are the Adams Central Greyhounds, Decatur Commodores. Monmouth Eagles, Geneva Cardinals and Jefferson Warriors. • ' One of Adams Central's- predecessors prior to the school con? solidation in 1941. however, won ' the crown on two different occasions. Monroe's Bearkatz winning, in 1943 and 1947. There were nine schools in the, ! tourney lyhen it was first award-; ed here in 1940, whh the entry list\ growing to \lO in 1943, when the Decatur Commodores were adImitted so the IHSAA and participated in the sectional.. The ‘4O- - team- tourney prevailed until last ■ year, when it was reduced to nine j with] the consolidation of Monroe, Kirkland and Washington town- ' ship schools into Adams Central. The Decatur Yellow Jackets are. ' the only team, to have won the ' tourney four times, copping the * honors in \ 1941, 1944. 1949 and J 1950. Three schools have won two tourney titles: Pleasant Mills in 1940 and 1942; Monroe in 1943 and ’ 1947. and Berne in 1945 and 1946. ‘ Hartford took the crown in 1948. ’ ' Only two of the 11 sectional ( champions have carried on to I regional titles. "T ' ' ' ' ' ■' ' _ ■ UKStsJLrJJ ■’ t ■ ■ ■ 1 ‘ A. HEARTY WELCOME from the Decatur Daily Democrat to the Adams county high school basketball players, coaches, school official* and fans as we are only 48 hours away from the opening tipoff of the 1951 sectional touirney. , :: , ii \ ' - I - f ■ 11 ■■ l \ * .’lf' . $ ■ ' •• • ’ LOOKING BACKWARD at the 1950-51 basketball season, which’closed last Friday night, we find only two Adams county teams which compiled what could be termed impressive retords in the matter of games won and lost. And only one other team finished the regular season above the ,500 mark. • -000- : . • ? i THE HARTFORD GORILLAS had easily the best all-over mark for the season, with, the Decatur Yellow Jackets second in line, and the Monmouth Eagles the only othercounty team to win more grames than it lost during the regular campaign. , However, some of the lower ranking teams picked Up considerable steam in I the latter stages of the Campaign and from here it looks ‘ like another] piighty interesting sectional. . —OO<H—REMEMBER? Here are the results of the 1950 sectional: Commodores 39, Berne 37. Jlartford 53, Jefferson 40. Yellow Jackets 51, Adams Central 44. Geneva 37, Monihouth 34. Commodores 73, Pleasant Mills 43, ' Yellow Jackets 53, Hartford 48. . 1 I v * CommodQres 61, Geneva ,53, Yellow Jackets 58, Commodores 46 (final). L -oQo“+ . - ' NECK’S OUT AGAIN r This (.dilrney will be the 12th consecutive sectional held in- Decatur since completion of the new school. Starting with that first tourhey in 1940, BASKETBAW<L, just as a lark and a space-fill-er, predicted the outcome of each sectional game. Our average over the past 11 years has not been too good. We’re s.till under the .500 |nark. In the 11 years, we have picked just five sectional dhampions correctly. And in those 11 years, we have made just one PERFECT prediction. That was in 1941, when the winner was correctly picked for every game. Here are BASKETBAWL’S guesses en the 1951 sectional: ■ ■; """000 ''T.y. PLEASANT MILLS-JEFFERSONThe Spartans l and Warriors met twice during the season, each winning one game. The Spartans seem to be up now, whjle the j Warribrs have been having \the difficulties of late. We pick PLEASANT MILLS. —oOo— t , BERNE-ADAMS: CENTRAL—This is a meeting of the two teams in the county with the season’s poorest won and lost records. A tougher schedule probably benefits “the Bears in experience. We pick BERNE. \ —oOo— COMMODORES-YELLOW JACKETS—The second j meeting in history of the Decatur schools. Met only one common foe during season, both defeating Geneva. 'That superiority in height"should make a lot of difference here, plus a much more rugged schedule. We pick <*F«ra l\o Pace Klsktt
