COLD WEATHER, (Cont. From Page On*) night to save their crops. The mercury fell to seven below zero yesterday In northern Arizona and 13 inches of snow fell al Grand Canyon. The first snow in 12 years fell st Ajo, in southern Arizona. Blizzards that were predicted for Kansas and Nebraska failed to develop, however, although some sections of Kansas were blanketed under six inches of snow. Residents of Seladia and Quincy and the area between those two cities resorted to candles, flashlights and lanterns as power lines snapped under the weight of thousands of tons of ice. Sedalia police said the "icing conditions are the worst in the history of this city.” The report was given over the state highway patrol's radio. The power was so weak that Kansas City listeners could barely hear It. Numerous trees crashed to the ground at Hannibal but utility workers were winning a fight to restore electricity to most sections of the city. Quincy was completely blacked out. Radio stations WTAD and WGEM resorted to emergency generators to stay on the air as did station WCAZ al Carthage, 111. The Quincy Herald-Whig was unable to publish. Almost all long distance circuits were knocked out as far north into Peoria and MaComb, 111. Among the towns listed as isolated in Missouri were Monroe City. Paris, Otterville, Smithton. Green Ridge. Walker, Harwood. Shell City, Rockville, Windsor, Hughsville, Palmyra. Stoutville. Vandalia, Perryville, Centralia and Santa Fe. The first Negro slave in America was traded by DeSoto in 1540 at Ecunchattae, Ala.
