Hospital Patient Scalded To Death Full-Scale Probe Is Ordered At Chicago Chicago. Dec. 22 (UP)—Esther Gatewood, 21 year-old patient at I the Chicago state hospital, was I found Resided to death early today in a hydrotherapy tub Authorities ordered a "full-scale" investigation to determine the circumstances of the girl’s death. She had been a patient at the hospital at Intervals since May. Dr. David Brown of the hospital, staff said Miss Gatewood died of second and third degree burns. He said the accident apparently occurred during a 20 minute period while the attention of nurses was distracted as they were subduing a violent patient in the mental and nervous ward. Dr. Paul Schnddt. coroner’s physician, prepared to perform an autopsy. Brown said that under the program for treating Miss Gat wood, she was supposed to have been in the tub from 6 pm. yesterday until 10 p m. He said she apparently was returned to the tub later by an at tendant. Shortly before 1 am. the attendant’s attention was diverted by the violent patient, he said. Miss Gatwood was found dead in the tub at 1:15 am. by nurse Theresa Wilier. Brown said that when he reached the therapy room. Miss Gatewood's body had been taken from the tub and placed on a (able. He said the hot water faucets were turned on full strength. He said that the relation of the tub to the faucets made It appear unlikely that Miss Gatewood could have gotten out of the tub and turned the hot water up my herself.
