Yellow Jackets Defeat Dunkirk, 46 To
Decatur Wins Over Dunkirk Tuesday Night Coming to life after a miserable first half, the Decatur Yellow Jackets chalked up their fifth victory of the season Tuesday night, defeating the Dunkirk Speedcats. 46-38. at the Decatur gym. The Jackets went through the first I t minutes of the game without scoring a field goal. Les Sautbine finally hitting one from well out. Dunkirk held a 6-2 lead at thend of the first quarter, witli four of their points on free throws and both of Decatur's on foul tosses. The Speedeats built their lead Up to 1<» 4 and Coach Bob Worthman then put in an entire second string quintet. Following Sautbine's fielder. Jim Moses hit from underneath and added a free throw when fouled on the shot to tie the score at 12-12. Dunkirk held a 16-14 lead at the halftime intermission. Shrink hit from the field to open the second half and Sauthlne netted one from the charity stripe. The Jackets' regulars went back into the game and a pair of quick field goals by Jack Petrie and George Bair made the score 19-18, witli Decatur in the lead for the first time in the game. Both teams zipped the meshes regularly for the rest of the period. with Decatur on top by a 32-29 margin at the close of the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets pulled steadily away in the final eight minutes of play, at one time leading by 46-32. Dunkirk cutting the final margin on four free throws and one field goal in the closing minutes. Larry Jennings was Decatur's scoring leader with 1(1 isdnts. followed by Bair with nine. For Dunkirk. James was the top scorer with 13 points. Each team missed 12 free throws as the officials ■ ailed l*i personal fouls and three technicals. The Yellow Jackets' next action will be In the four-team tourney at the Decatur gym Monday, Jan 2. St. Joseph Is Winner First Series Game St. Joseph took Its first step In defense of its city grade school championship Tuesday afternoon defeating Junior High. 23-14, in tne first game of the annual series, played at the Lincoln school gym. The winners, after leading 8-4 at the quarter and 13-10 at the end of a cloM first half, pulled away after the Intermission to score their triumph. The defending champions were on top at the end of the third jieriod. 17-12. Ed Wilder.
