Jim Mclntyre Loss Is Tough On Minnesota Minneapolis, Dec. 20—(UP)— Ollie Cowles, a smooth-talking perfectionist who directed Minnesota to second place In the Big Ten last season, doesn't think his Gophers will do that well In the coming basketball scramble. Thai's his honest opinion, but it hardly qualifies him as another walking pillar of pessimism in the coaching ranks. Cowles drips en th us las tn in expanding his siteup of his current squad. •‘lt's very coachable, smart and has everything needed to make u fine spirited team," glowed Cowles, who jumped to Minnesota last year after bringing Michigan a conference championship in two seasons. Only height and experience were lacking. Cowles claimed, obviously referring to the loss of six foot, 10 Inch Jim Mclntyre. Minnesota's leading scorer the past three years. Mclntyre's graduation was a relief to rival coaches who had to de vise ways to stop him. Occasionally they succeeded. .More often. "Big Jim." who netted 182 points in 12 games last season to finish second in scoring behind Don Beh feldt of Wisconsin, couldn't be halted. Gone with Mclntyre were five other lettermen, including Harold Olson, whose steady, guard play was Instrumental in Minnesota's overall record of IS victories against three defeats last year. Two regulars, headed by two for wards. Whitey Skoog. the cottontopped jump-shot specialist who as a sophomore last season was an all-conference, came back for this year's team. The second returnee was Jerry I Mitchell, a leech-like defensive player and a good long shot artist Bud Grant, probably the best rebound man In the league, was de dared ineligible last week. Mclntyre's replacement will be either letterman Wally Salovich. who makgs up In determination and hustle* what he lacks In natural ability, or Maynard Johnson, a junior transfer student who as a sophomore led the Minnesota state college conference Tn scoring. With Mclntyre now a spectator. Cowles has no regular over sixfeet four inches, a handicap he (ears will hurt when the going gets rough. A compensating feature, however. is that all the Gophers are solid, well-built athletes, and not a airing bean in the bunch. The Gophers, playing Cowles' system of percentage baskethall, will be tough defensively? They proved that In their first two outings, beating Loyola of Chicago 55 51 and Oregon State, which
