Farmers Visit Research Farm

The trip consumed three days and was under the guidance of Fred Schuler, district manager of the feed concern, who resides in Wapakoneta. O. D O. Callow, of Stiefel Grain Co.. Berne and the following five Adams county farmers made the trip: Rolandes Liechty. Leo Hanoi. Noah Hischy, Reuben Swartz and Marion Baker.
Farmers Institute Leaders Meet Here AB of the Adams county farmers' institute organizations were represented in a Monday afternoon meeting, states county agent L. K. Archbold. County chairman Ezra Kaehr was In charge of the meeting. Many ideas were exchanged on various phases of the program. A number of the Institutes plan to give judges of exhibits an opportunity to explain the reasons for placing a number of classes. Many are planning home talent evening programs. They have all agreed to have a county wide meeting of institute officers at the close of the series of meetings for the purpose of comparing notes and strengthlng the programs for the next year. Institute dates arc as follow: Jan. 31. — Berne and Geneva: Feb. 1. — Monmouth and Kirkland: Feb. 2. — Pleasant Mills; Feb. 3. — Union.

Man Suffocates In Terre Haute Hotel Terre Haute, Ind.. Dec. 20. — (UP) — Eugene Bergen. 47, Rockville. suffocated today after his mattress caught fire at a downtown hotel. Fireman Ray Kyle said Bergen apparently was smoking in bed at the Indois hotel and fell asleep. The mattress began burning. Bergen woke up and ran into the bathroom, instead of the hotel corridor. Kyle said. Firemen found his body there. Damage to the room was estimated at |IOO, but other parts of the hotel were not damaged. Five fire companies answered the alarm and fought the small fire. Denfeld Turns Down Commander's Post Ousted Navy Chief Refuses Command Washington. Dec. 30. —(UP)— Naval sources said today that Adm Louis E Denfeld, ousted chief of naval operations, probably will retire next month and take a lucrative job with a private business concern. Denfeld has turned down navy secretary FraDds P. Matthews' of ter of the poet of commander of U. 8. naval forces in European water*. But he has withheld a decision on whether to retire from active naval duty and has until Jan 19 to make up his mind Denfeld was removed from the navy's top job because of his part in the "admiral's revolt" against unification. In a letter made public by Matthews yesterday at bis request, the admiral said he could not accept the navy command In Europe because the ouster damaged his prestige so much that he could not fittingly represent this nation abroad. Denfeld told Matthews he feared circumstances of his ouster would prevent European nations from having the “necessary respect" for and confidence in him.
